NYCUDLBronx Regional Scrimmage:
Middle School Public Forum Debate
Resolved: The United States should require universal background checks for all gun
sales and transfer of ownership.
On behalf of the New York City Urban Debate League and De Witt Clinton HS, you are cordially invited to the 1st middle school scrimmage. We are offering Public Forum Debate at this first regional gathering as it is the predominant request of Bronx coaches, in order to prepare for the next Citywide tournament for MS, November 11. Future scrimmages might include other formats for middle schools. Schools are also encouraged to arrange sparring matches more frequently with their Bronx neighbors! Let us know how we can help broker those, too.
This scrimmage is mainly educational! No trophies. The first round will be synched and “stop action” so brand new teams learn the goals of each speech. A second round will be power-matched. Some teams may be asked to split and go maverick so that even numbers permit no “BYE” rounds. No trophies, but winning records count towards points to gain recognition for every 3 rounds won.
All questions, concerns and/or issues about the tournament should be directed to Bronx Outreach coordinator Loretta Brady–917 497 0446; .
Looking forward to seeing you all.

PermissionSlips:
One online permission slip per year is legally required for each student. This permission slip protects and promotes our debaters – they enable us to track attendance and record accurate debate results which are necessary for National Speech & Debate Association points and qualification for competitive tournaments. We are requesting that coaches turn in all permission slips by theFridaybeforethis tournament. For this tournament, please turn in permission slips by Friday,October 27th. You can access the permission slip here:
Permission slips translated into Spanish are available there, too.

Judges: Will be provided by NYCUDL HS students. Coaches will also be asked to judge to aid our educational mission. Abundant positive, specific feedback is most appreciated, along with a REASON FOR DECISION about which arguments outweighed. A quick rubric slip will be provided so all teams can walk away with a specific written critique to share with coaches for each round. As a teaching tournament, this even will focus on RANGE OF REFUTATION (multiple responses, numbered) and IMPACT COMPARISONS/WEIGHING.

Points will be on the scale of 30 points, within the range of 25-30 points. Mavericks will have their points averaged. We may reserve the right to set teams up evenly for quick power-matching. That may mean having a team split to go maverick so that there is an even number of teams, and no one has a “BYE” round. This scrimmage is mainly educational! However, winning records will count toward earning recognition for every 3 rounds won as the season progresses.
