This note is intended simply to document the files available at
I describe the files roughly in order in which the documents they represent were created. First listed is the file name. Then where appropriate I provide a full citation for documents that were published. Finally I provide a description of the contents of the document files.
Survey of Civilian War Casualties.pdf
Haney, W. (1971). A Survey of Civilian War Casualties among refugees from the Plain of Jars. In World Refugee and Humanitarian Problems. In Hearing before the Subcommittee to Investigate Problems Connected with Refugees and Escapees. United States Senate July 22, 1971. Washington, D.C.: USGPO, 1971, pp. 65-106. Reprinted in part in F. Branfman, (1972). Voices from the Plain of Jars: Life under an air war. New York: Harper Colophon, pp. 136-160.
This document is the report I prepared based on interviews with Laotian refugees, as printed in a report on Senate Hearings in 1971. As indicated the report was reprinted in part in Branfman (1972). The original report on which these documents are based was typewritten and contained a map and photographs of all of the refugees I interviewed. The map and photographs were not reproduced in the version of the report printed in the Senate hearing report. However, several dozen of the original photographs were reproduced in documents contained in the Laos 1-35 pdf files, as described below.
The Branfman (1972) book is unfortunately long out of print. However as of today, around a dozen used copies are available via amazon.com.
Survey of Civilian Fatalities-1.pdf
A Survey of Civilian Fatalities Among Refugees from Zieng Khouang Province, Laos. In Hearing before the Subcommittee to Investigate Problems Connected with Refugees and Escapees. United States Senate May 9, 1972. Washington, D.C.: USGPO, 1972, pp. 53-66.
This file is a reproduction of a report recounting a survey of fatalities among refugees from the Plain of Jars. As explained in the report, names of people who helped in this survey could not be revealed in order to protect their safety. But now, even 35 years later, they have my heartfelt thanks.
Pentagon Papers.pdf
Haney, W. (1972). The Pentagon Papers and the United States Involvement in Laos. In N. Chomsky and H. Zinn (Eds.) The Gravel Edition, The Pentagon Papers, Vol. V: Critical Essays. Boston: Beacon Press, 1972, pp. 248-293.
This file is simply a pdf version of the chapter I wrote for the Chomsky and Zinn volume 5 of the Beacon Press version of the Pentagon Papers.
Laos 1-11.pdf
Laos 12-21.pdf
Laos 22-31.pdf
Laos 32-35.pdf
These pdf files are reproductions of posters I used in giving antiwar talks in the early 1970s. The photographs and text are from the original version of theA Survey of Civilian War Casualties among refugees from the Plain of Jars. As explained above, the photographs in the original report were not reproduced in the version printed in the Senate Hearings report.
The Bombing of Laos.pdf
Haney, W. (1997). The bombing of Laos and the browning of one volunteer (1997). Paper presented at the 15th Annual Meeting Association of Third World Studies, Central Connecticut State University, Hartford, Connecticut, October 9-11, 1997.
This unpublished paper represents my reflections on the bombing of Laos some 30 years after I last left Laos. It contains references to other accounts of what happened in Laos and links to other relatively recent accounts of the continuing “deadly harvest” of the bombing of Laos.
Anyone who receives these files may use them in any way they think useful. Finally, in closing I thank Jessica Brown, currently a graduate student at Boston College, for making pdf versions of all of these documents.
