WLBA Select Baseball FAQ
Program Overview:
The goal of the WLBA select program is to offer a more intensive and competitive opportunity for players at the 9u, 10u, 11u, and 12u age levels. These teams will be selected during the Winter and will remain together throughout Winter workouts, as well as the Spring and Summer tournament seasons. These teams will not participate in WLBA’s REC program, but will play tournaments and individual games as selected by their coaching staff. Teams will participate in Cal Ripken State / Regional tournaments.
Registration / Fees:
Registration for the Select season will occur in November with tryouts and team selection in December.
Fee Breakdown: $1475 Annual Cost – Payment plan $240 due at tryouts with remainder payable monthly (Jan – May). If a player is not chosen for a Select team a refund of $190 will be credited to the REC fees for that player. If a player is selected to a team and chooses not to play no refund will be given.
Fee Includes:
- Weekly training time slot at WLHS Cage facility during Jan & Feb.
- In-Season training 3-4 times per week including WLHS Cage slots & On-field
- up to 10 tournament registrations (avg. cost $400 - $800 per tournament)
- Complete uniform package
- Equipment for team use
- Umpire fees for in-house gamiest West Linn
- Training fee for WLHS – Includes cage time, Pre-tryout camp (Nov), Jan/Feb Pitcher/Catcher/ Hitting clinics
- League administrative costs (Field fees, insurance, website fees, Cal Ripken registration, porta potties, etc)
If there is a decision to employ a paid coach, there will be an additional $400 - $500 per player coach fee assessed.
Team Selection:
Teams will be selected by a committee formed by the Select program coordinator. There will be NO coaches or parents with a child at that specific age level allowed to evaluate or select teams.
Tryouts will occur in December. Each age group will have 4 hours of evaluation time between 2 days. Tryouts will include Cage / On-field hitting, throwing, defensive fielding (infield & outfield), Pitching and catching will also be evaluated. There will also be live on-field game-like scrimmage (adult pitching).
Players may try-out for multiple age levels (i.e. 9 year old can try out for both 9u and 10u teams) There are no age restrictions outside of the Cal Ripken age for each level (8u players can tryout).
TRYOUTS WILL BE CLOSED TO ALL PARENTS / COACHES.
Coach Selection:
The goal of the Select program is to choose the “Right” coach for each team. That may include a parent/coach or a paid coach. Coaches will be identified by the select program coordinator. The select program coordinator will retain oversight on those coaches throughout the entire season. Coordinator will have access to game changer, score books, etc. to ensure proper player development for all 12 players.
Coaches will have NO input on team selection / make up.

January & Februrary – Hitting/Pitching/Catching Clinics (incl in fee)
Late March – Teams will begin practice / workout schedule
March – July Tournament play / Individual Game schedule
July – Cal Ripken State & Regional / World Series
Select teams will have access to all field facilities based on the calendar. Fields bridge availability for practice will be determined once the game calendar is set. Game times at fields bridge will be built in for Select teams during the REC season as demand requires.
