BTEC Level 3 National Business

Unit 13

Task 1 - Helpsheet

How organisations plan their recruitment

For a PASS (P1) - For this task, you need to research the recruitment processes used by two separate organisations, Saga Holidays & your chosen business.

·  Describe the reasons why you think businesses need to recruit staff (employee leaving, increased volume of business, different work, maternity cover, sickness, promotion). Page 322

o  What are the main reasons for recruitment at Saga Holidays?

Within the Saga group of companies, there are approximately 2000 staff who are encouraged by the management to develop themselves in whichever area of the business they like best to further their career. Because of this, there is a lot of staff movement between Saga companies and the need for recruitment occurs frequently. Saga Holidays is just one of 23 companies within the Saga group which has over 800 staff, of which a high proportion of those work within the call centre. This area of the company has a high burn out rate of Travel Consultants due to the repetitiveness of the role. The average employability time within this role is 1 to 2 years, and coupled with the fact of natural business growth, the need for recruitment is constant. In addition to this, Saga Holidays are usually in a constantly state of restructuring which again either creates new positions or makes old ones redundant. This again has a massive effect on Saga’s never ending need for recruitment.

o  What are the main reasons for recruitment at your business?

·  Explain the factors that businesses take into consideration when deciding to recruit (restructure, redeploy, productivity, capacity, technology) Page 323

o  What factors do Saga take into consideration with recruiting?

As stated earlier, Saga Holidays are constantly restructuring and streamlining procedures to make working practices more effective and efficient with the use of new and enhanced computer technology. They are constantly redeploying staff not just within the different functional areas of the company, but also across the whole range of companies including the USA & Australia.

o  What factors does your business take into consideration with recruiting?

·  Explain the difference between internal and external recruitment and the advantages and disadvantages of each one. Write them into sentences and paragraphs, do not just simply list. For each one consider the time and cost implications. Pages 324-325

o  Give examples of when Saga would use internal recruitment/external recruitment or both

Saga Holidays always use internal recruitment first to reduce costs and promote career development, however, if no suitable internal applicant can be found, they use external methods. For example, Saga are keen for anyone looking to get in to management to have a good knowledge of what all the main functional areas do within the business before being considered for a management position, therefore, staff are keen to move around the company broadening their knowledge of the operation.

o  Give examples of when your business would use internal recruitment/external recruitment or both

o  Explain the difference between internal (notice board, email, web page, intranet, company magazine, staff meeting) and external advertising for recruitment (use of job centres, consultants, recruitment agencies). Please include the cost and time considerations. Page 326-327

o  What methods of internal and external advertising do Saga use? Why/when? Give examples

Like Pent Valley, Saga Holidays advertise all vacancies internally and externally, however, Saga tend to advertise internally first (notice boards, intranet) to reduce costs, however, if no suitable internal applicant can be found, they advertise externally using local papers, radio, Saga website and the job centre. If they are looking to recruit a specialist ie: IT or general management they tend to use travel magazines and recruitment agencies, however, this is always a last resort due to the cost which can be anything up to a £2000 depending on the position and only if the person is taken on.

o  What methods of internal and external advertising does your business use? Why/when? Give examples.

·  Explain the three methods of application (letter, online and telephone) and explain some of the advantages and disadvantages of each one. Page 328-329

o  What methods of application do Saga use? Why?

Covering letter (shows the literacy capabilities), application form (shows education, experience and reference details) and a CV

o  What methods of application does your business use? Why?

·  Create a flow chart for each business (Saga and your business) to show the recruitment process of each business and explain each part of the process underneath the flow chart. Add evidence if possible.
