8 a.m. Creating a Mini-Strategic Plan

A strategic business plan is a tool you can use to keep your program office, agency and employees on track. It helps you focus energy and attention on the agency’s mission, core business goals and values. A properly thought-out and executed strategic business plan—even a small one that governs your respective area—is a tremendous asset to anyone serious about taking Hispanic recruitment and retention to the next level.

9:30 a.m.Train the Trainer: Finding and Applying to Jobs With the Federal Government

This refresher course will provide you with detailed information about finding and applying to jobs with the federal government. At the end of the session, you will be able to tutor/guide employees and senior staff at your agency. You also will be able to quickly and effectively address questions and provide assistance to your specific constituencies. Topics covered will include:

  • Learning to navigate the USAJOBS Web site and searching for jobs;
  • An explanation of commonly used terms;
  • Tailoring searches to particular types of jobs and specific geographic areas;
  • Writing and posting a resume that highlights strengths and accomplishments, including learning what information to keep or add to a resume, how to communicate veteran-specific information, and how to search OPM.gov for series classification flysheets that can be used to search for federal key word equivalents to describe current work experience;
  • Posting cover letters, transcripts and other supplemental documents to the USA Jobs site; and
  • Applying for vacancies without leaving the site.

11 a.m.Hiring Flexibilities and Authorities

Understanding the hiring flexibilities and authorities available to your agency will help you guide the discussion with your hiring managers on the best strategies to fill vacancies. This session will provide you with a ready reference on the various hiring authorities and incentive tools that are available for use in crafting job offers for candidates. The use of these hiring authorities will allow for greater flexibility and assist in expediting the hiring process.

2 p.m.Uncovering and Defeating Unconscious Bias

Unconscious bias, also known as implicit or hidden bias, is the concept that individuals can have a bias at an unconscious level that influences their decision-making in ways in which they are unaware. This session will address the ways in which unconscious bias influences our daily thinking and agency culture. Strategies for defeating unconscious bias also will be discussed in small-group settings and shared with the group.

11 a.m.Managing Up and Managing Down

Managing up and managing down are two distinct parts of managing groups of people in your office and agency: senior staff and the employees you oversee. In this session, you will identify possible gaps between senior staff expectations and your understanding of your role in the office/agency; learn how to maximize communication styles to effectively navigate manager/managed relationships; and evaluate how effectively you currently work with managers and others.
