I am sorry to report that we have lost another key member of our club. Sterling Fordham passed away in January at his home in Big Bear. Over more than a decade he donated hundreds of hours to the club. Sterling served both as chief rangemaster and club president. Unfortunately health problems had kept him from enjoying trap and other shooting activities for the past two years. He was a friend and well-known personality at the range, he will be missed.

The continued high volume of activity at the range has allowed us to expand our contributions to various nonprofit organizations in the valley. This year our donations should exceed $5,000. In addition to multiple youth team sports sponsorships we have donated to the Big Bear High School ASB, BBHS Sports, Meals-on-Wheels, Sky High Training (youth wrestling, boxing and taekwondo), the Big Bear Chamber of Commerce, the Antique Car Club and the Trail Foundation. The Board will continue its policy of donating income in excess of annual expenses to these and other worthy organization.

This season we hope to expand our educational activities. Again this year Gary Steube will offer the California Hunter Education Course. Additionally, several of our range staff have recently been certified as NRA instructors for the basic rifle, pistol and shotgun courses. We hope to offer these courses during the 2013 season. We will continue to offer H.R. 218 qualifying to retired peace officers.

A reminder of range safety; when available, we assign two RSOs each weekend. If only one is available, range access will be limited. We are also staffing the office with an additional person (also whenever a volunteer is available) in order for the RSO’s to keep their attention focused on the shooting line. All of this extra staffing has become necessary due to the continued growth in business and large number of inexperienced shooters. The good news is that the continued high volume of shooters is expected to allow us to meet our annual expenses by the beginning of September. That means that we will again offer free shooting (either one shooting lane or two trap rounds per day) to members following Labor Day this year.

All members are encouraged to attend our annual meeting and range clean-up on April 6th at 10:00 AM (rain out date April 13th). Bring your ideas for range improvements and a rake. We’ll provide the pizza and sodas.

In addition to preparing the range for the 2013 season we will hold the election of officers. If you will be unable to attend the annual meeting please submit the attached ballot prior to the April meeting. If you wish to nominate yourself or someone else for a director’s position, you may write in the name and he or she will be included in the April election at the range. Please remember that club directors and club range safety officers are expected to volunteer a minimum of two weekends each month from April through October as well as assuming other responsibilities (as appropriate to the office) for the range needs throughout the year. The individuals named on this ballot have accepted nomination for a director’s position and have committed their time for the 2013 season. Please detach and return the ballot by April 5th.
