The Chippewa National Forest is seeking a candidate to fill a permanent position for a GS-0802-8/9 Civil Engineering Technician to be located at the Forest Supervisor’s Office in Cass Lake, Minnesota. This is a great opportunity for someone who is looking for a challenging position that is integral to forest management on a National Forest located in the heart of Minnesota’s lake country.
The purpose of this Outreach Notice is to determine the potential applicant pool for this position and to establish the appropriate recruitment method and the area of consideration for the advertisement. Duties of this position:
Duties to include planning, coordinating and administering road maintenance contracts, directing and inspecting contractors work for emergency road repairs, serving as the engineering lead person for the minerals (gravel) program, developing simple to moderately complex contract packages for road maintenance and repairs, culvert replacements, etc. Position holder would serve as the primary inspector on a various construction projects as well as assisting with the Boundary Management Program field work for 4 to 6 weeks during the winter. Survey crew leader for large topographic design surveys. Preparation of drawings, details, maps and specifications will be involved.
This position would provide services forest-wide as part of a road management team managing a road system approximately 2,600 miles in total.
The position requires both office and field work, strong communication skills, and proficiency in word processing and analytical computer programs including AutoCadd Civil 3D and Arc GIS software. Field work requires land surveying, construction inspection, technical plan and map reading skills. This position requires the incumbent to be able to walk and drive on rough terrain and in remote forest locations.
