The current aim of the centre so far

Through a broad based curriculum that includes academic, physical and creative artsthe children with disabilities ,to access their right to education by

Inclusion in the mainstream school system

Gaining a primary school certificate through the Open Basic Education Programme of National Institute of Open schooling (NIOS)

Acquiring life skills to communicate effectively and become independent.

The fact that Right To Education Act has come in to being from April 2010, and that RTE includes children with disability in its purview, has strengthened our belief that mainstream schools are the most appropriate and legitimate place for all children to get education. Exclusion/non-inclusion is a violation of their rights. With this in mind, while Centre will function as before till 2011 March, the focus will be to strengthen our efforts to facilitate inclusion of children in the mainstream schools and ensure quality education so that they are retained in the mainstream system.. The efforts will be to prepare and support parents in admitting their children in the mainstream school by 2011.

From 2011 April, keeping with our aim that children with disabilities are a part of mainstream, Centre plans to shift its focus from being a special school, to actively prepare them to enter mainstream school. Further, we want to strengthen our services to children in the age group of 0 to 6 years in the area of early childhood care, and prepare them early enough for inclusion in to mainstream schools when time comes.

Major Changes that has been planned for 2010-11

  • Regular meetings with parents, schools will be held focusing on information on rights to education as well as on provisions and schemes that are available for persons with disability to empower them to access their rights.
  • Periodic visits to schools where children have been included to support the teachers with teaching-learning materials, teaching strategies and other aids. Besides this, regular meetings with the school authorities will be held to sensitize them to the needs and rights of children.
  • Regular exposure to activities at AARTH ASTHA’s Inclusive child right centers that runs in the communities to provide opportunities for mingling with other children and to understand about own rights.
  • Duration of the Centre continues to remain 6 hrs as this has helped children who have gone to mainstream schools to cope with their duration.
  • The children will be divided in two classes. Each class headed by a special educator and supported by a therapist, therapy assistant, assistant teacher, music & dance resource persons and support staffs.
