Literacy:Comprehension
Reading: *Module 1 – Engage NY* This week scholars will continue to identify the central or main message in literature about individuals and groups from world communities who have gone to great lengths to access education. Scholars will read Nasreen’s Secret School, a story about a girl from Afghanistan and what her family went through in order for her to receive an education. Ask your scholar to retell the story to you and identify the central or main message.
Weekly strategy: Summarize: A summary is a short statement of the most important events in a story, in a person’s own words. Summarizing help good readers under-stand the important events in a story in the order they happen. Summarizing also helps good readers make predictions about them.
Weekly skill: Make & Confirm Predictions: To make predictions, good readers use ideas or hints, in a story to tell what is going to happen later in the story. After making a prediction, readers read on to confirm it, or find out if it was correct. If they are wrong, they can revise their prediction, or make a new prediction. Making and confirming predictions helps a reader understand characters’’ actions and the plot’s main events.
