Huntington at Mohican Outdoor School

May 28-31, 2013

ADDITIONAL REMINDERS

On Tuesday morning, May 28th, each student must bring a PAPER BAG LUNCH with a drink. Please pack your child's lunch in his or her backpack. All lunch items must be disposable. Please pack 3 or 4 sharpened pencils, an empty water bottle, a “free-read” book, and your child’s raincoat or rain poncho in the backpack. However, if it is raining, rain gear should be worn. All regular school items should be removed from the backpacks. Backpacks need to be worn on students’ backs at Mohican. Rolling backpacks are not appropriate.

If you would like to order a packed lunch from the Huntington cafeteria, please fill out and return the attached lunch form and fee by Monday, May 20th.

We are sending another “Suggested Equipment List” at this time. We suggest several extra pairs of socks beyond what these lists recommend. Students should wear their waterproof boots for the bus ride Tuesday. They must have their boots on regardless of the weather in Brunswick. (Pack their shoes and/or their second pair of boots.)

Please do not send any cash with your child the morning we leave. Mohican will not accept cash and we cannot accept additional spending money that day. Any spending money is due by May 13th.

Students will write one letter home from Mohican. (Even though they may arrive home before their letters do!) Please have your child bring in a stamped envelope, addressed to your home, if they have not already done so. Students need a 3-prong pocket folder (plastic, if possible), also by Monday, May 13th.

We suggest that you pack using the checklist provided. Please try to put your child's name on as many items as possible. Pack two plastic trash bags in which your child can repack any wet items and/or their sleeping bag for the return trip. These trash bags should be clearly labeled with your child’s name.

Students may not bring candy, food, electronic games or devices, knives or other tools. A book or magazine may be taken. Cameras and watches may be brought at your own risk. Disposable cameras are suggested.

Remember that students carry all their own gear. It is better to pack a few smaller bags than one large one. Label all bags with your child’s name using tags or masking tape. Sleeping bags or other bedding should be packed in large trash bags.

(over)

Students should be brought to school Tuesday morning, May 28th, between 9:00 and 9:15 a.m. (Closer to 9:15 is better to avoid the regular school buses. Students will not be marked “tardy.”) If the equipment truck is in the back parking lot, you may load gear directly onto the truck. If the truck is not here, luggage should be lined up in the back hallway of the school across from the library. If you cannot bring your student at that time, you may drop off the labeled luggage in the back hallway anytime after 7:30 a.m., and your student may ride the bus or walk with their backpack as usual.

We would appreciate it if a few Dads and Moms would volunteer to help load the equipment on the morning we leave.

Please make arrangements for your child to be picked up in the Huntington School gym on Friday, May 31st, between 1:00 and 1:30 p.m. Students will need to be signed out. If your child will be signed out by someone other than his or her parent, please fill out and return the Alternate Transportation Form, no later than the morning we leave, indicating your plans. Please inform your child of your arrangements. This form was sent home in the earlier packet.

All internally-taken medicines and external medications must be turned in to the teachers in person the morning we leave. Please remember to send any medicine in its original container with your child's name on it. (Please place the original container(s) in a Ziploc bag also clearly labeled with the student’s name.) If you are sending any prescription medicine with your child, you and your physician must complete the PRESCRIPTION MEDICINE form. Non-prescription medicine sent to Mohican must be accompanied by the NON-PRESCRIPTION form.

We are all looking forward to an exciting and educational week. We thank you for all your efforts in making this experience possible!

Sincerely,

The Fifth Grade Teachers
