Twenty-ThirdSunday in Ordinary Time
Isaiah 35:4-7a; James 2:1-5; Mark 7:31-37 [128B]
Jesus Cures the Deaf
“And people brought to him a deaf man who had a speech impediment and begged him to lay his hand on him.He took him off by himself away from the crowd. He put his finger into the man’s ears, and spitting, touched his tongue; then he looked up to heaven and groaned and said to him, ‘Ephphatha!’ that is, ‘Be opened.’ And immediately the man’s ears were opened, his speech impediment was removed, and he spoke plainly...‘He has done all things well.”
When we read the miracle accounts in the gospel, the healing, restoration to life, the feeding of the multitudes, it is important to pause and look at specific details which make one account different from others. Note that the man with the hearing impairment was brought by others to Jesus. It might have been their faith which initiated the process. Jesus went ‘one on one’ with him.
We find four steps in the process - touch, saliva, eye direction and a groaning word. The results are clearly described by Mark.
On the day of our baptism, the celebrant touched our ear and mouth praying that we too might be open to hear His Word and be ready to proclaim or speak our praise of God.Have we?

From Thom Sabatelli regarding Sunday Religious Education for children
Catechists (Instructors) will meet with me after the 9:00 AM Mass on Sunday, September 13th to plan for the coming year. Instructional sessions for our children will begin on Sunday, September 20th.
Please remember, if you would like to join our family of catechists (instructors) for this year, or if you know of someone who would, please let me know ASAP. My goal is to have a team of at least two catechists per group. You won't be on your own - you'll be paired with an experienced instructor, which will make the task easier for everyone. In addition, the program is divided into 45 minute lessons that are already planned out for you, so there is very little planning required.
Thanks for your constant support and enthusiasm, as well as your generous contribution of time and talent and camaraderie to our program.
You are cordially invited to opening reception to “Celebration” a painting project by Carol Bowen, Tuesday September 9th, 3:30PM.in the secondary floor gallery of the DaltonSchool, 108 E 89th St.
One hundred percent the sales of art from this show will benefit St. Joseph's Church and the Subukia Scholarship fund to educate children in Kenya. RSVP
