What We Do:
The Emergency Interoperability Consortium (EIC) recommends and assists with the implementation of technical interoperability standards for emergency and incident management. Our Consortium consists of both public and private entities to insure the practical and profitable use of open standards.
The EIC maintains a formal agreement with the Department of Homeland Security to promote Standards development and adoption and works with independent standards bodies, especially the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS).
Membership in the EIC benefits both the for-profit community and the emergency response community by influencing the standards and best practices that enable information interoperability.
The EIC has successfully participated (though OASIS) in the ratification of an alerting messaging standard called the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) and a distribution method called the Emergency Data Exchange Language (EDXL). Current and future work include; Resource Management, Hospital Availability, and Situation Reporting.
How We Started:
The Emergency Interoperability Consortium (EIC) was launched in October 2002 to address our nation's critical lack of valid interoperability standards for emergency and incident management. With the tragic events of September 11th still fresh in the minds of many, it was clear to many organizations that something needed to be done to solve the emergency interoperability problem for the exchange of data. The EIC has become a powerful advocate for the development and adoption of standards for using Web services and Extensible Markup Language (XML) to facilitate the exchange of data.
Who We Are:
The Emergency Interoperability Consortium represents a diverse group of more than 20 private and public organizations involved in Emergency Management, Incident Management, Business Continuity, and Risk Management.
