Brief History

Penny Carpanini bought her first Labrador Retriever as a family dog in 1965,a yellow male mostly of Sandylands breeding. For the next 20 years raising her family took precedence over the dogs.

Penny started showing in 1967 and registered the Carpenny affix and exhibited at her first Crufts in 1969. In 1970 Penny bought her first Labrador Retriever bitch and bred her first litter in 1974, which was the same year in which she had her first judging appointment. She bredher first big show winner in 1984who she later made up as her first UK Champion in 1986.

Judging Experience

Penny first awarded CCs in Labradors in 1989 which was followed by championship appointments every year bar one since then. She hasjudged nearly all of the UK Labrador breed club championship shows including The Labrador Retriever Club and Midland Counties Labrador Retriever Club, plus most of the prestigious UK all-breed championship shows over the years including Labrador Retriever Dogs at Crufts in 2008.

Since Penny’s first appointment outside the UK was at the Reims International, France 1989. Penny has awarded CCs / Green Stars / CACs / CACIBs or the equivalent, throughout Europe and beyond every year to date.

Penny’s judging experience has taken her, often many times, to France, Germany, Ireland, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg, Italy, Spain, Austria, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Poland, Romania, USA, Australia, Japan and Mexico.
She has been privileged to judge, the Norwegian Kennel Club’s Oslo Championship Show, The Labrador Retriever Club of NSW Australia, The Potomac in Virginia, The Golden Gate California and the LRC of Georgia USA and to judge thefirst ever Labrador Retriever Club breed shows for Belgium, Italy, Spain and JKC Gifu Pref Japan.

Lecturing, Seminars and Publications

Penny also lectures and conducts seminars on judging and breeding the Labrador at home and abroad and for 12 years edited and produced The Labrador International Newsletter magazine that proved to be a great educational tool and had a readership in more than 40 countries worldwide. (Ed: Some of you may remember the Winter 2006 edition when South African Ch FT Charway Stormpetrel of Trevena GMHR,bred by Janice Pritchard and owned by Mike and Di Holman, graced the cover page.)

Breeding and Awards

Penny seldom breeds more than a couple of litters a year, mainly blacks and yellows with her first ever chocolate litter in 2010. She has owned and personally campaigned a number of UK champions, all bar three were home bred, the others were Carpenny sired.Carpenny Labradors have won BIS over the years at the Labrador Retriever Club of Wales, The Scottish Labrador Retriever Club, North West Labrador Retriever Club, Three Ridings Labrador Retriever Club, The Yellow Labrador Retriever Club, Northumberland and Durham Labrador Retriever Club, East Anglia Labrador Retriever Club, Kent Surrey and Sussex Labrador Retriever Club, West of England Labrador Retriever Club, Cotswold and Wyevern Labrador Retriever Club, Midland Counties Labrador Retriever Club, Labrador Retriever Club of Ireland and the United Retriever Club, plus twice Group 1 and once Group 2 at general championship shows. She is also very proud to have won BIS on three occasions at the Labrador Retriever Club.

Over the past 10 years, Carpenny Labradors won BOB at Crufts twice, BOS twice, with a further six Res CCs, between five different Labradors. To date Carpennys have been awarded in excess of 100 UK CCs – all but one being home-owned - and have had breed champions on every habitable continent of the world, for which she feels justifiably proud in this numerically strong breed!

Many of her top winners have been gun-trained, gaining their show gundog working certificates. Ch Carpenny Anchorman WGC has awards in UK field trials distinguishing him as the only Labrador Retriever Crufts BOB to have accomplished this in over 30 years (Ed:Ch Squire of Ballyduffbeing the previous dog to achieve this). His half brother GB Ch International Nowegian Swedish Finnish and Nordic Champion Carpenny Walpole won several Field Trials when he was over in Scandinavia in 2001. Penny says that she can take no personal credit for these achievements as training and handling were down to Joy Venturi-Rose, Chris Rose and Torunn Sorbye.

Apart from the show-dogs and shooting companions, Carpenny Labradors have been acquired by The Seeing Eye/Guide Dogs For the Blind in UK, Ireland, Holland and Spain however what makes her happiest is when pet owners come back again, wanting ‘one exactly like’ their much loved previous Carpenny that died of ripe old age!

Many years ago, and after judging many different breeds including several in the Hound group, Penny made the carefully considered decision not to go down the all-rounder judging road. The more times she judged, the less time she could devote to her chosen breed, which is where her undying interest and enthusiasm lies. Counting herself primarily as a breeder/exhibitor Pennyknows just how difficult it is to produce and show that ‘good one’ and it makes her appreciate excellence all the more in others.
