SECTION 102239.13 - FOLDING GLASS-PANEL PARTITIONS

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1  RELATED DOCUMENTS

Retain or delete this article in all Sections of Project Manual.

  1. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.

1.2  SUMMARY

1.3  DEFINITIONS

Retain terms that remain after this Section has been edited for a project.

1.4  PREINSTALLATION MEETINGS

Retain "Preinstallation Conference" Paragraph below if Work of this Section is extensive or complex enough to justify a conference.

If needed, insert list of conference participants not mentioned in Section013100 "Project Management and Coordination."

1.5  ACTION SUBMITTALS

  1. Product Data: For each type of product.
  2. Sustainable Design Submittals:

Retain "Product Data" Subparagraph below to require minimum recycled content for LEED 2009 MR Credit2 - "Recycled Content." Excludes glass as it’s considered proprietary information by the glass manufacturers.

  1. Product Data: For recycled content, indicating postconsumer and preconsumer recycled content and cost.
  2. Shop Drawings: For operable glass-panel partitions.
  3. Include plans, elevations, sections, details,[numbered panel installation sequence,] and attachments to other work.
  4. Indicate stacking and operating clearances. Indicate location and installation requirements for hardware and track, blocking, and direction of travel.

Retain "Samples for Initial Selection" and "Samples for Verification" paragraphs below for two-stage Samples.

  1. Samples for Initial Selection: For each type of exposed material, finish, covering, or facing.
  2. Include Samples of accessories involving color selection.
  3. Samples for Verification: For each type of exposed material, finish, covering, or facing, prepared on Samples of size indicated below:
  4. Panel Edge Material: Not less than 3 inches (75 mm) long.
  5. Glass: Units 12 inches (300 mm) square.

  2. Include design calculations for restraints that brace tracks to structure above.

1.6  INFORMATIONAL SUBMITTALS

Retain "Coordination Drawings" Paragraph below for situations where limited space necessitates maximum utilization for efficient installation of different components or if coordination is required for installation of products and materials by separate installers. Coordinate paragraph with other Sections specifying products listed below. Preparation of coordination drawings requires the participation of each trade involved in installations within the limited space.

  1. Coordination Drawings: Reflected ceiling plans, drawn to scale, on which the following items are shown and coordinated with each other, using input from installers of the items involved:
  2. Partition track, track supports and bracing, switches, turning space, and storage layout.
  3. Suspended ceiling components.
  4. Structural members to which suspension systems are attached.
  5. Size and location of initial access modules for acoustical tile.
  6. Items penetrating finished ceiling, including the following:
  7. Lighting fixtures.
  8. HVAC ductwork, outlets, and inlets.
  9. Speakers.
  10. Sprinklers.
  11. Smoke detectors.
  12. Access panels.
  13. Insert item>.
  14. Plenum acoustical barriers.

Revise "Setting Drawings" Paragraph below to suit Project.

  1. Setting Drawings: For embedded items and cutouts required in other work[,including support-beam, mounting-hole template].

Coordinate "Qualification Data" Paragraph below with qualification requirements in Section014000 "Quality Requirements" and as may be supplemented in "Quality Assurance" Article.

  1. Qualification Data: For qualified Installer.

Retain "Product Certificates" Paragraph below to require submittal of product certificates from manufacturers.

  1. Product Certificates: For each type of operable glass-panel partition.
  2. Product Test Reports: For each operable glass-panel partition, for tests performed by a qualified testing agency.
  3. Sample Warranty: For manufacturer's special warranty.

1.7  CLOSEOUT SUBMITTALS

  1. Operation and Maintenance Data: For operable glass-panel partitions to include in operation and maintenance manuals.
  2. In addition to items specified in Section017823 "Operation and Maintenance Data," include the following:
  3. Panel finish and finishes for exposed trim and accessories. Include precautions for cleaning materials and methods that could be detrimental to finishes and performance.
  4. Seals, hardware, track, track switches, carriers, and other operating components.

1.8  QUALITY ASSURANCE

  1. Installer Qualifications: An entity that employs installers and supervisors who are trained and approved by manufacturer.

1.9  DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

Retain this article if sequencing of panel facing materials is required (for example, for matching pattern or grain).

  1. Protectively package and sequence panels in order for installation. Clearly mark packages and panels with numbering system used on Shop Drawings. Do not use permanent markings on panels.

1.10  WARRANTY

When warranties are required, verify with Owner's counsel that warranties stated in this article are not less than remedies available to Owner under prevailing local laws.

  1. Special Warranty: Manufacturer agrees to repair or replace components, glass excluded, of operable glass-panel partitions that fail in materials or workmanship within specified warranty period.
  2. Failures include, but are not limited to, the following:
  3. Faulty operation of operable glass-panel partitions.
  4. Deterioration of metals, metal finishes, and other materials beyond normal use.

Verify available warranties and warranty periods. Longer warranties than two years may not be available for glass panel partitions.

  1. Warranty Period: Five years from date of Substantial Completion.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

Manufacturers and products listed in SpecAgent and Masterworks Paragraph Builder are neither recommended nor endorsed by the AIA or ARCOM. Before inserting names, verify that manufacturers and products listed there comply with requirements retained or revised in descriptions and are both available and suitable for the intended applications. For definitions of terms and requirements for Contractor's product selection, see Section016000 "Product Requirements."

2.1  PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

Retain "Delegated Design" Paragraph below if Contractor is required to assume responsibility for design.

  1. Delegated Design: Engage a qualified professional engineer, as defined in Section014000 "Quality Requirements," to design bracing of tracks to structure above.

Retain "Acoustical Performance" Paragraph below only if required for Project. This may significantly limit available products.

  1. Acoustical Performance: Provide operable glass-panel partitions tested by a qualified testing agency for the following acoustical properties according to test methods indicated:

If retaining "Sound-Transmission Requirements" Subparagraph below, indicate ratings in Part2 or on Drawings. Verify, with manufacturer, that values for STC are possible and practical for required products.

  1. Sound-Transmission Requirements: Operable glass-panel partition assembly tested for laboratory sound-transmission loss performance according to ASTME90, determined by ASTME413, and rated for not less than the STC indicated.

Retain "Fire-Test-Response Characteristics" Paragraph below for wood-framed panels if the amount of exposed wood on the wall surface is significant (usually greater than 10 percent of the wall area). Revise as required by governing code for partition location, occupancy classification, and whether facility is sprinklered or not. Verify and insert requirements of authorities having jurisdiction.

  1. Fire-Test-Response Characteristics: Provide panels complying with one of the following as determined by testing identical products by a testing and inspecting agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction:
  2. Surface-Burning Characteristics: Comply with ASTME84; testing by a qualified testing agency. Identify products with appropriate markings of applicable testing agency.
  3. Flame-Spread Index: [25] [75] <Insert value> or less.
  4. Smoke-Developed Index: [450] <Insert value> or less.

2.2  OPERABLE GLASS PANELS <Insert drawing designation

Copy this article and re-edit for each product.

Insert drawing designation. Use these designations on Drawings to identify each product.

Retain third option in "Operable Glass Panels" Paragraph below for glass partitions with acoustical properties.

  1. Operable Glass Panels: [Frameless aluminum] [Aluminum-framed] glass-panel partition system, including panels, [seals,]suspension system, operators, and accessories.
  2. Basis-of-Design Product: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide Kwik-Wall Company; [Centerfold] [Variofold] [Variotec Trimless] [Variotec Trimmed] [KWV-Tec Trimless] [KWV-Tec Trimmed] [KWP-Fold] [3010GL] [3020GL] [3030GL] or comparable product by one of the following:
  3. Advanced Equipment Corporation.
  4. Moderco Inc.
  5. Nana Wall Systems, Inc.
  6. Solar Innovations, Inc.
  7. Insert manufacturer's name>.
  8. Panel Operation: Manually operated, [individual] [paired] [continuously hinged] panels.

In paragraph below, the 3/16-inch (4.76-mm) gap between panels applies to all products except Variotec Trimmed glass wall, KWV-Tec Trimmed, and 3000GL series, which have full perimeter aluminum trim. Edit to suit Project requirements.

  1. Panel Construction: As required to support panel from suspension components and with reinforcement for hardware attachment. Fabricate panels with maximum 3/16-inch (4.76-mm) gap between panels with concealed fasteners. Fabricate panels so finished in-place partition is rigid; level; plumb; aligned, with tight joints and uniform appearance; and free of bow, warp, twist, deformation, and surface and finish irregularities.
  2. Factory-Glazed Fabrication: Glaze operable glass panels in the factory where practical and possible for applications indicated. Comply with manufacturer's written instructions and with requirements in Section088000 "Glazing."

Retain one of two "Glass and Glazing" paragraphs below; revise to suit Project. Retain first if all glass is specified in Section088000 "Glazing." Retain second if glass and glazing requirements or custom requirements for glass-panel partitions are specified in this Section.

  1. Glass and Glazing: Glass type <Insert description> as specified in Section088000 "Glazing."
  2. Glass and Glazing: As follows:

Retain "Safety Glass Standard for Partition Panels" and "Safety Glass Standard for Pass Doors" subparagraphs below to suit Project. The IBC generally requires safety glass to be used in operable partitions and communicating pass doors. Verify the safety glass requirements of authorities having jurisdiction.

  1. Safety Glass Standard for Partition Panels: Glass products complying with testing requirements in 16CFR1201, CategoryII, or ANSIZ97.1, ClassA.
  2. Safety Glass Standard for Pass Doors: Glass products complying with testing requirements in 16CFR1201, CategoryII.
  3. Glass: [Manufacturer's standard] [Custom] safety glass and glass assemblies as indicated and complying with [the following] [requirements in Section088000 "Glazing" and as follows]:

Retain one or more of "Tempered Glass," "Tempered Patterned Glass," "Laminated Glass," and "Insulating-Glass Units" subparagraphs below; revise to suit Project. Verify availability of required options with manufacturer.

  1. Tempered Glass: ASTMC1048, KindFT (fully tempered), TypeI (transparent flat glass), [Class1 (clear)] [Class2 (tinted)], Quality-Q3.
  2. Tempered Patterned Glass: ASTMC1048, KindFT (fully tempered), TypeII (patterned flat glass), Class1 (clear), Form3 (patterned); and of quality, finish, and pattern specified.
  3. Laminated Glass: ASTMC1172, with [clear] [colored] [patterned] [graphic] <Insert requirement> interlayer.

1)  Annealed Float Glass: ASTMC1036, TypeI (transparent flat glass), [Class1 (clear)] [Class2 (tinted)], Quality-Q3.

Retain "Insulating-Glass Units" Subparagraph below if required for acoustical reasons.

Insulating glass is available only on Series 3000 GL products.

  1. Insulating-Glass Units: Factory-assembled units consisting of sealed lites of glass as indicated, separated by a dehydrated interspace, qualified according to ASTME2190, and complying with other requirements specified.

Retain “Glass Lite” subparagraph below for Series 3000GL.

1)  Glass Lite: IGU 1.75 inches (44.5 mm) thick, with steel frame and aluminum trim.

Retain one option in "Spacer" Subparagraph below. If retaining a specific spacer material, verify availability with manufacturer.

2)  Spacer: [Manufacturer's standard spacer construction and material] [Aluminum with mill or clear anodic finish] <Insert material>.

Kwik-Wall recommends use of 3/8-inch- (9.5-mm-) thick glass for fabrication heights up to 9 ft. (2.75 m), and 1/2-inch- (13-mm-) thick glass for fabrication heights greater than 9 ft. (2.75 m). Edit subparagraph below to suit Project requirements.

Retain "Glass Vertical Edge" Subparagraph below for frameless glass.

In "Panel Width" Subparagraph below, second and third options are a custom-sized product. Before retaining either option, verify cost and availability with manufacturer.
