Dear Parents and Students,

The Powder Springs Elementary Media and Technology key team is pleased to announce the Summer Reading Incentive Program. In conjunction with the county’s Summer Reading Matters program, we would like for every student to read at least five books this summer. Students should record the title of five age appropriate books they have read over the summer on the reading log. A parent should initial to verify that the student has completed the reading assignment. In addition, students should choose one of the suggested projects to complete for one of the books on the reading log. Completed logs and projects should be turned in to the students’ homeroom teachers during the first week of school. All projects will be displayed in the media center, and students who complete the reading incentive will be invited to a reading celebration which will take place in August. In addition, the students will be able to take a comprehension quiz on Accelerated Reader to boost their score totals at the beginning of the year. You can use www.arbookfind.com to find out whether a book has a quiz on AR and how many points it is worth.

The program is optional. However, the importance of reading over the summer is well documented, particularly for students who may already be struggling with reading. We strongly encourage all students to participate.

A list of books for your child’s upcoming grade level is attached. For rising first graders, we recommend:

Amelia Bedelia Goes Camping

by Peggy Parish

AR: 0.5 point

Curious George and the Puppies

by H.A Rey

AR: 0.5 point

We thank you in advance for your support. Happy Reading!
