Job Purpose:
To undertake the data collection, assembly and management and to assist processing steps for conversion of raster age-structured population count distribution datasets to datasets representing births and pregnancies for 75 countries.
Key Accountabilities/Primary Responsibilities (6-10 bullet points maximum)
  • The collection, assembly and archiving of population census, microcensus and household survey data.
  • The processing of these datasets to obtain subnational data on age and sex population structures.
  • The processing of household survey and other datasets to obtain subnational data on age specific fertility rates.
  • The matching of these datasets to GIS boundary layers
  • The development and maintenance of an archive of country-specific spatial datasets of relevance to population, birth and pregnancy distributions
  • The management of large collections of raster datasets representing age and sex structured population counts.
  • The management of vector datasets depicting subnational age-specific fertility rates and urban/rural growth rates.
  • The development of approaches to automate the conversion of the raster population count datasets to datasets depicting numbers of births and pregnancies for 75 countries for different time periods.
  • The development of approaches to automate the extraction of per-administrative unit estimates of numbers of pregnancies for each country
  • Carry out administrative tasks associated with specified research funding, for example risk assessment of research activities, organisation of project meetings and documentation. Implementation of procedures required to ensure accurate and timely formal reporting and financial control.

  • The role-holder will work under the supervision of Dr Andrew Tatem, Geography and Environment.He will provide direction and guidance for the research work to be undertaken. The post will be attached to GeoData Institute.

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience:
Undergraduate or higher degree with a strong specialisation in GIS, or previous industry experience of GIS or demographic data. / √ / CV, cover letter, publications, interview
Experience at working with large gridded 'raster' datasets. / √
Experience with GIS vector files and joining data tables to them. / √
Experience in automating the processing of raster datasets. / √
Computer programming experience. / √
Experience in database development. / √
Knowledge and familiarity of census, household survey and other demographic datasets. / √
Familiarity with spatial population distribution dataset production methods and spatial statistical methods. / √
Familiarity with spatial visualization tools and methods. / √
Experience in dealing with the design and distribution of open access datasets. / √
