Arizona Planning Guide for Natural Resource Concerns

Soil Erosion - Wind

USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service Page 1 Arizona

Field Office Technical Guide, Section III August, 2003

Resource Concern Definition – Detachment and transport of soil particles caused by wind degrade soil quality and/or damage plants.

Quality Criteria – Land use and management does not cause accelerated wind erosion. Wind erosion on cultivated land does not exceed the established soil loss tolerance “T” for the soil. On non-cultivated land, wind erosion rates do not significantly exceed that expected for the site or limit the sustainable use of the soil resource or intended use of land.

Method for evaluating resource condition

·  Visual Assessment (pedestals, blow-out areas)

·  Rangeland Health Evaluation Worksheet

·  Wind Erosion Equation (WEQ)

Conservation Practices that may be needed as part of a Conservation Management System to achieve Quality Criteria for this resource concern include those listed here.
