Job Title:Team Wales Manager

Hours of work:Approximately 40 hours before the tournament and also for the duration of the 2018 World Schools Debating Championships

Salary:The position is voluntary but flights to and from Zagreb, the registration fee for WSDC and some meals are included

Location:UK and at WSDC in Croatia and Slovenia(17.07.18-27.07.18)

Reporting to:Senior DYV Officer, Head of Oracy during the tournament

Overview

●Collect and submit necessary paperwork for Wales’ participation at the 2018 World Schools Debating Championships in Croatia and Slovenia (WSDC 2018)according to the tournament’s timelines

●Act as Team Wales Team Manager forWSDC 2018

●Travel with Team Wales debaters to and from Croatia and Slovenia

●Adjudicate on behalf of Wales at WSDC 2018

●Act as a representative and ambassador of the English-Speaking Union and Wales during the Championships

Responsibilities

●Adhere to the ESU and WSDC codes of conduct and any other relevant HR policies (safeguarding, bullying and harassment, whistleblowing etc.)

●In co-ordination with ESU staff at WSDC 2018, care for the emotional and physical wellbeing for Team Wales during the tournament. This includes ongoing coordination and discussion with the Team Coach on balancing training needs with recreational time for the team

●Familiarise themselves with the ESU’s child protection policies and procedures including:

●Complete an online Educare course in Child protection

●Submit to an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Check (DBS)

●Communicate promptly and reliably with the team, coach and ESU staff before and during the competition.

●Submit all paperwork in a timely manner (copy of passport and signed codes of conduct)

●Travel with Team Wales to and from WSDC 2018

●Act as Team Wales Team Manager at WSDC 2018

●Attend any Team manager meetings before and during the tournament

●Keep a record of team expenses during the tournament

●Adjudicate debates at the World Schools Debating Championships on behalf of Wales

●Act as a representative and ambassador of the English-Speaking Union and Wales during the Championships

Specific Skills and Experience

Essential

●Be familiar with the World Schools Debating Championships format of debate

●Be eligible to judge at the World Schools Debating Championships

●Be familiar with child protection and safeguarding

●Experience with pastoral care of young people

●Excellent time management and prioritisation skills

●Excellent organisational skills

●Ambassadorial skills

●Ability to communicate effectively with young adults

●Ability to build a rapport and work effectively with a team

●Available to attend the full Championships (17-27.7.2018) and fly out with the team ahead of the Championships.

Desirable

  • Prior experience of the World Schools Debating Championships
  • Experience of debating in Wales/ links to the Welsh schools debating circuit
  • Available to meet the team prior to the Championships

●To support and promote the charitable objectives of the ESU.

●To act as an ambassador for the ESU and Wales during the tournament

Hours of Work

There will be approximately 40 hours work for in the immediate run up to the tournament and during the Championships themselves.

Location

The Championships will be held in Zagreb (Croatia) and Ljubljana (Slovenia) however the Team Manager will be expected to travel with the team from London.
