TELESCOPING BLEACHERS

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.01 SUMMARY

A.Section Includes:

1.Provide wall attached electric power operated telescoping bleacher system where noted.

a.Provide complete electromechanical operating system to open and close bleachers, including motor, motor starter, safety switch, and pendant switch.

b.Provide wiring and electrical work required from junction box, installed by building electrical system installer, to bleacher operating components.

2.Provide wall attached manually operated telescoping bleacher system where noted.

3.Provide work and materials to anchor bleachers in place.

4.Provide the following accessories:

a.Self-Storing Endrails; at ends of bleachers not next to a wall

b.End Panels; at ends of bleacher stack not next to a wall

c.Scorer's Table

d.Scorer's Tables - Standard

e.Scorer’s Table - Fixed

f.Non-Slip Aisle Treads

g.Removable AisleCenter Railings/Handrails

h.Intermediate Steps at Aisles

i.Access Hatches

j.Recoverable Truncations (Manually Operated), at Row 1 seating to allow for use of space by handicapped persons in wheelchairs where indicated on Drawings.

k.Removable Guardrails at front of Row 2 seating to be used when Row 1 recoverable truncations are set for use by handicapped persons in wheelchairs.

l.Back Panels; provided at reverse fold bleachers

5.Provide letters on face of folded bleachers as indicated on Drawings by altering colors of seating.

1.02 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

A.Description:

1.Telescopic Bleacher System: Multiple tiered seating rows consisting of deck components, risers, and supportive understructure.

2.Telescopic bleachers shall be operable on the telescopic principle, stacking vertically in a minimum floor area when not in use.

3.Secure the first moving row, on manually operated sections, with key locks. All other rows shall be mechanically locked, operable only upon unlocking and cycling of the first row.

1.03 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

A.General:

1.Design telescoping bleachers, including comprehensive engineering analysis by qualified professional engineer, using performance requirements and design criteria specified.

2.Engineer, fabricate, and install telescopic Gymnasium seat to following structural loads without exceeding allowable design working stresses of materials involved, including anchors and connections.

3.Apply each load to produce maximum stress in each respective component of each seat unit.

4.Design criteria specified is minimum and shall apply, except apply more stringent requirements when required by NFPA 102, governing code, and authorities having jurisdiction.

B.Design Criteria:

1.Gymnasium Seat Assembly: Design to support and resist, in addition to own weight, following forces:

a.Seats and decking to resist live load of 120 pounds per linear foot.

b.Uniformly distributed live load of not less than 100 pounds per square foot of gross horizontal projection.

c.Parallel sway load of 24pounds per linear foot of row.

d.Perpendicular sway load of 10 pounds per linear foot or row.

2.Hand Railings, Posts, and Supports: Engineered to withstand following forces applied separately:

a.Concentrated load of 100pounds applied at any point and in any direction.

b.Uniform load of 50pounds per foot applied in any direction.

3.Guard Railings, Post, and Supports: Engineered to withstand following forces applied separately:

a.Concentrated load of 200pounds applied at any point and in any direction along top rail.

b.Uniform load of 50pounds per foot applied horizontally at top rail and a simultaneous uniform load of 100pounds per foot applied vertically downward.

4.Member Sizes and Connections: Design criteria (current edition) of following to be basis for calculation of member sizes and connections:

a.AISC, Manual of Steel Construction

b.AISI, Specification for Design of Cold Formed Steel Structural Members

c.AA, Specification for Aluminum Structures

d.NFOPA, National Design Guide for Wood Construction

C.NFPA Requirements: Seating design shall meet the requirements of NFPA 102 Standards for Grandstands, Folding and Telescoping Seating, Tents, and Membrane Structures.

1.04 SUBMITTALS

A.General: Provide submittals in accordance with Section 013300.

B.Product Data: Submit Product Data for each type of product indicated. Include complete specifications, construction details, and material descriptions, dimensions of individual components and profiles, and finishes for telescoping bleachers.

C.Shop Drawings:

1.Indicate telescoping bleacher seat assembly layout, including plans for bleachers in both the stacked and extended positions, section through bleachers, elevations, details, and attachment to other work.

2.Show seat heights, row spacing and rise, aisle widths and locations, assembly dimensions, anchorage to support structure, material types of finishes, and accessories.

3.Provide graphics layout drawings indicating pattern of contrasting or matching seat colors.

4.Provide wiring diagrams.

D.Samples: Submit color samples for products specified which require color(s) selected by Architect.

E.Contract Closeout Submittals: Provide in accordance with Section 017700 and 017800:

1.Operating and Maintenance Data: Provide (2)copies of an Operating and Maintenance Manual.

2.Warranty: Submit (3)signed and dated copies of manufacturer’s bleacher warranty.

1.05 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A.Regulatory Requirements: Entire telescoping bleacher system installation shall meet requirements of governing codes.

B.NFPA Standard: In accordance with requirements of NFPA 102, and specifically with Chapter 5, "Folding and Telescopic Seating", except where other requirements are indicated by Architect/Owner.

C.Manufacturer Qualifications: Company specializing in seating with not less than 20 years experience in manufacturing telescoping bleacher systems.

D.Engineer Qualifications: Registered licensed professional engineer employed by telescoping seating system manufacturer to certify that the equipment to be supplied meets or exceeds the design criteria of this Specification.

E.Installer Qualifications:

1.Bleacher Installer: Authorized representative of telescoping bleacher manufacturer.

2.Electrical Workers Qualifications: Accredited electricians performing work in strict accordance with governing codes.

F.Seating Layout: Meeting the requirements of current IBC and State Code requirements specifically relative to folding and telescopic seating, except where additional requirements are indicated or imposed by authorities having jurisdiction.

G.Welding Standards and Qualifications: In accordance with AWS D1.1, Structural Welding Code Steel, and AWS D1.3, Structural Welding Code Sheet Steel.

H.Electrical Components, Devices, and Accessories: Listed and labeled as defined in NFPA70, by a qualified testing agency, and marked for intended location and application.

I.Regulatory Requirements: In accordance with applicable provisions in the U.S.Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board’s ADAABA Accessibility Guidelines and ICC/ANSI A117.11.

J.Deviations From Specifications:

1.It will be Bidder’s responsibility to notify Architect of deviations from these Specifications prior to submitting a Bid.

2.Bidders not notifying Architect of deviations will be presumed to have Bid as specified.

1.06 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A.General Requirements:

1.Deliver telescopic seats in manufacturer’s packaging, clearly labeled with manufacturer’s name and content.

2.Do not deliver bleacher components before installation is to commence.

3.Handle seating equipment in a manner to prevent damage.

1.07 SITE CONDITIONS

A.Field Measurements:

1.Coordinate actual dimensions of existing construction affecting telescoping bleacher installation by accurate field measurements before fabrication.

2.Show recorded measurements on final Shop Drawings.

3.Coordinate field measurements and fabrication schedule with construction progress to avoid delay of Work.

B.Protection of Floor: Protect Gymnasium wood floor during operations associated with the installation of new bleachers. Damage to wood floor shall be repaired by qualified persons and cost for repairs will be charged to Bleacher Contractor.

1.08 WARRANTY

A.Manufacturer’s Product Warranty: Submit manufacturer’s standard warranty form for telescoping bleachers. Product warranty is in addition to, and not a limitation of, other rights Owner may have under Contract Documents.

1.Warranty Period: (1) year from date of Final Completion.

2.Beneficiary: Issue warranty in legal name of Project Owner.

3.Warranty Acceptance: Owner is sole authority who will determine acceptance of warranty documents.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.01 MANUFACTURERS

A.Acceptable Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements of the Contract Documents, acceptable manufacturers are as follows or Owner approved equal:

1.Hussey Seating Company

2.Interkal, Inc.

3.Irwin Telescopic Seating Company

2.02 MATERIALS

A.Lumber: Kiln dried, surface (4) sides, Southern Pine, B and Better finish, finger jointed, edge glued, meeting requirements of SPIB standard for Southern Pine.

B.Structural Steel Shapes, Plates, and Bars: ASTM A36.

C.Undercoated Steel Sheet: ASTM A1008/A1008M, DesignationCS (ColdRolled Commercial Steel), or ASTM A1011/A1011A, Designation CS (HotRolled Commercial Steel).

D.Galvanized Steel Sheet: ASTM A653, G90 coating designation.

E.Structural Tubing: ASTM A500, GradeA, coldformed; ASTM A501, hotformed.

F.Extruded Aluminum: ASTM B221, alloy as standard for manufacturer.

G.Polyethylene Plastic: ASTM D1248, TypeIII, ClassB, molded, color pigmented, textured, impact resistant, structural formulation; in color as selected by Architect from manufacturer’s standard colors.

H.Fasteners: Vibrationproof, of size and material standard with manufacturer.

2.03 DIMENSIONAL REQUIREMENTS

A.Row Depth: [22] [24] [26] [30]inches from front of seat to front of seat.

B.Row Height: Not less than 171/2inches from foot board to top of seat.

C.Row Rise: Not less than 101/2inches to not more than 115/8inches from top of seat to top of seat.

D.Length of Units: As indicated on Drawings.

E.Number of Rows: As indicated on Drawings.

2.04 UNDERSTRUCTURE FABRICATION

A.Frame System:

1.Wheels: Not less than 4inch diameter by 2inches, with nonmarring soft rubber face to protect floor surfaces, with moldedin sintered iron oil impregnated bushings to fit 3/8inch diameter axles secured with Etype snap rings.

2.Lower Track: Interlock with adjacent lower track with an integral antidrift bearing at front of track to prevent separation and misalignment. Each lower track shall contain a tier catch to lock each row in open position and allow unlocking automatically.

3.Upper and Lower Track: Provide adjustable stops to allow field adjustment of row spacing.

4.Vertical Columns: High tensile steel, boxed channel shape finished inside and out.

5.Diagonal Knee Bracing: High tensile steel angle members throughbolted to deck stiffeners and columns. Maximum unsupported deck length between bracing locations to be 8feet.

6.Tapered Deck Stiffeners: High tensile steel throughbolted to decking and spaced not to exceed 4feet on center. Locate deck doublers at each plywood butt connection.

B.Deck System:

1.Section Lengths: Each bank shall contain sections not to exceed 26feet in length with a minimum of (2)supporting frames per row, each section. Section lengths in excess of 26feet are unacceptable.

2.Nosing and Rear Riser: Continuous formed galvanized steel members.

3.Decking: 5/8inch AC grade plywood, interior type with exterior glue, 5ply, all plies Southern Pine with plugged crossbands, produced in accordance with National Bureau of Standards PS183.

4.Attachment: Throughbolted front and back to deck stiffeners, doublers, and frame cantilevers. Attachment by use of selftapping fasteners or retained by friction is unacceptable.

5.Deck End Overhand: Not to exceed frame support structure by more than 4feet.

2.05 SEATING FABRICATION

A.Comfort Curve Plastic Seat System:

1.Seats: 18inch long unitized interlocking engineered high density polyethylene modules providing scuff resistant textured 12inch wide anatomically contoured seat surface.

2.Profile: designed with internal reinforcement ribs and cantilevered to rear to provide not less than 51/2inch smooth toe space beneath seat. External ribs permitting debris collection are unacceptable.

3.Seat Support: Secure each seat support module against fore/aft movement by not less than (2)transversely sited steel fasteners spaced not less than 23/4inches on center, tying structure firmly to steel nosing.

4.Number Plates: Design seat module to accept and captively retain seat number plates.

5.End Caps: Enclose end of each row with matching end caps. Design end caps with concealed attachment and provide indent for row letters.

2.06 FINISHES

A.Under-Structure:

1.Finish steel under-structure on all surfaces with an epoxy powdercoat finish or equal as approved by Owner.

2.Tubular steel which cannot be painted inside is unacceptable.

B.Wear Surfaces: Surface subject to normal wear by spectators shall have a finish that does not wear to show different color underneath:

1.Steel nosing and rear risers shall be pregalvanized with a minimum spangle of G60 zinc plating. Painted nosings or risers are unacceptable.

2.Decking shall have a sealer coat and high gloss clear urethane finish or a high density polyethylene overlap permanently bonded to plywood deck. Painted decks are unacceptable.

3.Plastic seats to be selected from manufacturer’s standard colors.

2.07 FASTENING

A.Welds: Performed by welders certified by AWS standards for the process employed.

B.Structural Connections:

1.Secured by structural bolts with prevailing torque lock nuts or freespinning nuts in combination with lock washers.

2.The use of selftapping bolts or screws without locking nuts is not acceptable.

2.08 OPERATION

A.Electrical Operation With Friction Power:

1.General:

a.Each seating group shall be electrically operated.

b.Operation shall be full bank operation with adjacent units being interconnected and entire bank of units operating as one.

c.Entire group shall open and close by a friction drive system.

d.Manufacturer shall determine the number of power units required to operate each group so bleachers extend and return straight.

2.Electrical Power Requirements:

a.Contractor shall provide, from existing building electrical system, the required power source centered behind each seating group.

b.Contractor shall be responsible for final hookup and required wiring from power source to control circuits and portable pendant control.

c.Power shall be 208 volt, single phase.

3.Operating Force: Power units shall develop friction forces adequate to operate the bleachers so they do not twist or rack during operation and maintain a straight alignment when extended and returned to closed position.

4.Operating Speed: Power units shall operate quietly at a maximum rate of 15feet per minute, giving operator maximum opportunity for safe controlled operation.

5.Portable Pendant Control:

a.Control operation by a hand held pendant switch.

b.Pendant switch, with 15feet of cable, shall plug directly into a receptacle mounted in skirt board for first row of seating.

2.09 ACCESSORIES

A.Front Aisle Step:

1.Provide a swing up front step at each aisle.

2.Front steps shall engage with front row to prevent accidental separation or movement.

3.Provide steps with nonskid rubber feet.

4.Coordinate construction materials and finish with decking materials.

5.Provide safety strip at front edge of step.

B.Intermediate Aisle Steps:

1.Provide intermediate aisle steps, which are onehalf the row rise, at each aisle.

2.Intermediate steps shall be permanently attached closed design.

3.Coordinate construction materials and finish with decking materials.

4.Provide safety strip at front edge of each step.

C.End Rails:

1.Provide selfstoring type rails at ends of units not next to a wall.

2.Where adjacent telescoping seating sections are interconnected to provide a single operational bank, rails are not required between sections.

3.Permanently attach rails to each row.

4.Rails shall not require removal for operation of the unit.

5.Rails to meet governing code requirements, including NFPA 102.

6.Finish rails with powder-coated black enamel.

D.Aisle Railings:

1.Provide bleacher manufacturer's standard selfstoring pipe railing system at each aisle.

2.Aisle railings shall be permanently attached to mounting pocket, which shall allow railings to pivot and fold within deck with no need for removal.

3.Rails to meet requirements of authorities having jurisdiction.

4.Aisle railings shall be an individual rail design, located on every other row, beginning at Row2.

5.Rail pockets shall not protrude beyond face of bleacher when in closed position.

6.Finish rails with powdercoated black enamel.

7.Aisle Width: Not less than 48inches wide with aisle railing centered on aisle width.

E.Guardrails at Permanent Truncation: Provide 42inch high permanent guardrails where permanent bleacher truncations occur.

For Portable Bleachers:

F.Back (Top) Railings:

1.Provide bleacher manufacturer’s standard 42inch high rear railing system across entire back of portable bleacher systems.

2.Finish railings with powder-coated black enamel.

G.End Panels:

1.Provide full height solid end panels consisting of clear Northern Red Oak or Appalachian Red Oak hardwood plywood and support materials required to enclose open ends of each platform section or group of sections when in the closed position.

2.End panels shall enclose space between wall and back of selfstoring end rails.

3.Factory finish end panels as directed by Owner.

H.Back Panels:

1.Provide full height solid back panels at reverse folding bleachers.

2.Panels shall consist of clear Northern Red Oak or Appalachian Red Oak hardwood plywood and support materials required to enclose backs of free standing reverse folding bleachers.

I.Transport System For Portable Bleachers: Provide 2mobile hydraulic dollies suitable for transport of portable bleachers.

J.Scorer's Table: Provide 2 of bleacher manufacturer's standard scorer's table, 15inch wide by 8foot length, with plastic laminate work surface, selfstoring.

K.Recoverable Truncations To Allow For Wheelchairs:

1.Provide manually operated first row pull out areas of seat units where noted on Drawings, to allow for seating of handicapped persons in wheelchairs when seat units are not pulled out.

2.Provide removable guardrails to be manually installed at front of seating row directly behind recessed seating area in bleachers when recessed space is being used by handicapped persons in wheelchairs.

L.Access Hatches: Provide 1 bleacher manufacturer's standard access hatch to space below each bank of bleachers if access is not otherwise available when bleachers are extended. Locate hatches as coordinated with Architect.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.01 EXAMINATION

A.Verification of Conditions:

1.Verify that area to receive telescoping Gymnasium seats is free of impediments interfering with installation and that condition of substrates is acceptable to receive bleachers in accordance with bleacher manufacturer's recommendations.
