Congratulations!!! You are an Honors Student J!!!!!!
So what does it mean to be an Honors Student? Being in an honors course means you’ve made the commitment to do your best work at all times and to push yourself to improve every day. Sometimes that means just giving the right answers is not enough. Complete sentences, proper grammar, word choice, and evidence that you’ve really thought about your answers will earn you the best score. If you see the comment “NHL” on a paper, it’s not referring to hockey. What it stands for is “Not Honors Level.” Be sure to put your best foot forward at all times. The examples below should help to illustrate what “Honors Level” really means.
Example Question: Evaluate the actions of Tom and Lily. Do Tom and Lily do the right thing in not going back to the cottage? Explain your opinion.
Answer #1: yes, because they’d give away its location
Score: 1 point
Although the answer is not wrong, it is not written at an honors level. The student did not use complete sentences nor did they give evidence from the text to support their ideas. Also, it is difficult to know what they are writing about because they do not give any details.
Answer #2: Tom and Lily do the right thing by not going back to the cottage because they’d give away its location to a sinister character like Mr. Noakes.
Score: 2 points
This answer is stronger because the student uses complete sentences and details from the question to help the reader understand what they are writing about; however, they can still go a step further in strengthening their answer by adding a quote and using strong word choice.
Answer #3:
Tom and Lily do the right thing by not going back to the cottage because by returning, they may give away its location to a corrupt person thus unintentionally destroying the magical place. Sinister characters like Mr. Noakes were already questioning where the couple had been. He noticed Lily’s suntan saying, “‘Brown, eh? Suntan? Scrumptious’ he said, looking meltingly at Lily.”
Score: 3 points (Honors Level)
This answer is the best because it uses complete sentences, gives enough detail s, and supports the student’s opinion by using evidence from the story.
