Dear Parents,

Welcome to the beginning of an excellent school year. We are so excited to be your child’s teacher. We believe that you are an essential part of your child’s school life. Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns. Our conference time is from 1:15-2:00 each day. You can call, e-mail, or write us a letter if you want to set up an appointment with either one of us. Listed below are a few things we want to share with you about our classrooms and the school. Please let us know if you have any questions about the procedures and expectations listed below.

Schedules Students go to 5 classes in the morning and have lunch and recess from 12-1. They then have specials. Specials are Art, Music or PE.

After specials they have Enrichment. Enrichment is a small group in the classroom, computer, or library.

Agenda/Reading Log

This year your child needs to purchase an agenda if you haven’t already done so. This is extremely important to help get your child become organized and will be another communication tool between teachers and parents. Students need to be responsible for keeping up with what they are supposed to accomplish each day. Students will write down what they have done in each class daily. If they do not finish the work, they are to highlight or put a star next to the assignment they did not complete. This becomes homework and needs to be returned the next day. They are not allowed to take home test or quizzes. Please sign the agenda each night. It is your child’s responsibility to have you sign their agenda and return the homework. This is also to show that your child has read for 20 minutes daily.

Saddlebags

Every Thursday your child will bring home a folder containing important information from the school. The envelope should be signed and returned the next day.

Binders-

PLEASE do not throw away papers in the binder if you are organizing your child’s binder. We will clean out the binder each term.

Homework

Homework is given to reinforce what is taught at school as well as promote responsibility. We will assign specific assignments some days, and other homework assignments will be work that your child did not finish in class. If there is an emergency that occurs in your family when an assignment is due the next day, please write a note and we will extend the due date for emergencies. If your child does not do their homework, they will receive an R-check, and a note in the agenda to let you know.

Quizzes/ Studying

Your child will have quizzes, and Unit Assessments throughout the school year. Please have them study their multiplication facts several times weekly also.

Testing- 5th graders will take the Math, Reading and Science STAAR on March 30th,31st and April 22nd.

Doctor’s Appointments Please schedule appointments after 12, so your child does not miss

class instruction.

Dismissal

Please notify your child’s teacher in writing, or call the office if there is a change in the dismissal routine. Without a note, your child will be sent home the way they normally go. Oral notification by a student (I am going home with a friend today”) is not sufficient notification for a teacher to allow a change in dismissal routine.

Clinic

As per RISD policy, any medications that a student needs to have administered during the school day must be left in the Clinic along with a written prescription from their doctor- this includes ALL over the counter medicine. At no time are students allowed to have medicine including cough drops.

Snacks

We will have a snack time each morning. Please send a healthy snack and water bottle (with sports top) with your child daily.

Lunch

If your child will be buying a lunch from the cafeteria, it is best that they prepay before school in cafeteria A. If you plan to eat lunch with your child, one student is allowed to join you.

Camp

We will be going to Camp Grady Spruce on Oct. 13th, 14th and 15th in Graford, TX. The cost is $160, and is due by September 26th. Please let us know if you are interested in going as a chaperone. The cost for chaperones is $100.

Sincerely,

The 5th grade teachers
