Te Kura provides for secondary students to attend a one and a half day Comprehensive First Aid Course. The Red Cross have training rooms throughout the country, and offer courses many times a month. Because of this we do not list each individual course.

Unit Standards:

Level 1: 6402 – Provide resuscitation (1 credit)

Level 2:6401 – Provide First Aid (1 credit)

Level 3:6400 – Manage first aid in emergency situations (2 credits)

Coastguard Boating Education

Coastguard Boating Education run maritime safety courses throughout the North Island based at one of their venues. Boating Education also offers these courses online and workbook based distance learning. The 2 qualifications that Te Kura supports are:

Day Skipper

About:

Day Skipper is our CBE’s most popular course and is the best course for those new to boating. It is an introductory course for all members of the family or crew, and applies to a wide range of vessels including yachts, launches, powerboats, jet skis, sea kayaks, and waka.

The course covers boat handling, safety equipment, navigation, tides, weather, rules and regulations, emergencies, and knots. It is a broad course outlining the whole boating experience.

Unit Standard:

26542 – Demonstrate basic knowledge of the operation of pleasure/small craft by day (Level 2, 6 Credits)

Maritime VHF Radio Operator Certificate

About:

The Maritime VHF Radio Operator Certificate course covers the general features and functions of a maritime VHF radio, correct distress, and urgency procedures for ‘Mayday’ and ‘Pan-Pan’ calls, pro-words and phonetic alphabet, trip reports, weather services, callsigns, EPIRBS and other search-and-rescue equipment.

Unit Standards:

19491 – Demonstrate knowledge in using VHF marine radio and an EPIRB (Level 3, 3 Credits)

Police Preparation

Learn about the role of NZ police officers, career opportunities, entry requirements and the tests you will need to pass to get into NZ police. You will also get to hear about the day-to-day activities of an NZ police officer.

Overview

This two day introduction to New Zealand Police is the starting point for a career as a police officer. The course leads into a programme at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa that will prepare you for the tests you will need to pass to get into NZ Police. Prepare yourself for the tests now by enrolling on this STAR introductory course.

Unit Standard:

Level 2;4259 – Describe the role of New Zealand Police and the services it provides in the community (2 Credits).

What’s it all about?

You’ll gain an understanding of basic Illustrator techniques and terminology working on industry standard Software and hardware (Adobe Creative Suite in a Macintosh computer environment). You will explore basic techniques for creating vector imagery/illustration and type including manipulation techniques, layering, using the pen, adjusting paths, handling colour and basic workflow tips.

Discover the secrets to designing great interiors. This taster course will stimulate your creativity within a workshop format as you explore design skills, colour and space planning. You'll also gain an understanding of just how complex it is to create an exciting interior through building technology, joinery detailing, ergonomics and CAD, through to the intricacies of colour psychology and spatial analysis.

What's it all about?

This pre-entry unit standard is for people training as a food service staff to work in a broad range of food and beverage service outlets.

Health Education

What's it all about?

This will give you a taste of what a career in Health can offer you. Experience a range of nursing activities in Wintec's School of Health simulated learning area. This area is set up as an actual hospital ward complete with computerised patient simulation models that assume real life health issues. During the day you will find out about the changing role of the nurse. You'll also learn about what studying occupational therapy or midwifery involves and a little about some of the diverse areas of practice they work in, with an opportunity to talk to lecturers and ask any questions. You'll also learn which subjects at secondary school will assist your application and success in the Bachelor of Nursing/Midwifery & O/Therapy.

Manual Pattern Making

What’s it all about?

Fashion garments start with an idea that needs to be turned into a pattern and then a garment. On thiscoursestudents learn how current industry software is used to create and design garments. They find out how to make basic pattern blocks, turn those blocks into patterns, add seam allowances and style lines.

Barber/Hairdressing 5day course

Handy with a razor? Like doing hair ups? VARDA’s Star programmes have been developed for the many young people who view hairdressing, barbering and/or the fashion industry as a possible career choice.

This standard based 5-dayshort course is specifically forsecondary school students. It is suitable for students who are interested in either Barbering or Hairdressing.

This on-board experience will take part in a simulated aircraft environment using real on-board equipment. Students will participate in various fun activities during the action packed 2 days which will help them explore the reality of the role and responsibility that comes with being a cabin crew member.
