Research Interests

I am currently interested in using an evolutionary framework to investigate selected aspects of yeast biology, especially phenotype evolution and speciation.

I am studying natural populations of Saccharomyces spp. involved in sympatric associations and I am interested to understand the processes that drove ecological speciation in this group. A working hypothesis is that adaptation to different temperature ranges played a major role in speciation and ecology of Saccharomyces.

Another ongoing research concerns the basidiomycete yeast Phaffia rhodozyma, an astaxanthin-producing yeast. We recently showed that this yeast has a remarkable association with different tree hosts and that a single (and distinct) phylogenetic lineage is found in each host. We want to explore the consequences of such a pattern in terms of biogeography, genetic flow and species / population structure.

Since we hypothesize that speciation in fungi might also be related with the loss or modification of the typical sexual cycle, Pseudozyma and Rhodosporidium yeasts are presently being used as models to study the evolutionary consequences of loss of sexual competence.

Past research was mostly focused on molecular systematics and diversity of basidiomycete yeasts. This research theme is now pursued less intensively. Nevertheless, I am involved, as a contributing author, in the newest edition of the treatise “The Yeasts, A Taxonomic Study”, scheduled to appear late in 2008.

Research Interests
Systematics of Ascomycetous plant pathogenic fungi, especially with respect to correct diagnoses of diseases. At present I am concentrating on the genus Botryosphaeria but also keep an interest in the genus Diaporthe. In an attempt to organize the data coming from various sources on Botryosphaeria systematics, I have prepared and maintain a website dedicated to this genus.
