NML Foundation Day function started with traditional lighting of lamp in a ceremonial way by the Chief Guest, Prof. S. Banerjee, former Director, National Metallurgical Laboratory accompanied by dignitaries – Mrs. Sudha Rao, Ms. Anuradha Altekar, Dr. Pradip Nijhawan and Director NML Dr. S. Srikanth. While delivering the welcome address Dr. Srikanth traced the NML’s history along with directions provided by the earlier Directors and also the contributions of the Laboratory towards the growth of the industrial cause. Prof. S.P. Mehrotra, the last Director, NML also mentioned about the various achievements made by the Laboratory during his tenure. The auditorium hall was packed up with the scientists & retirees from the country across and also abroad.

NML Foundation Day Awards are also given away. These include Nijhawan Award for best paper published in 2009 from NML, Altekar Awards for best technology, Prof. P. Ramachandra Rao award to Best Employee, Prof. S. Banerjee Award for best in-house project and Meritorious student awards. There were also two special awards for designing of Diamond Jubilee logo and Souvenir cover.

Chief Guest, Prof. S. Banerjee delivered the foundation Day lecture. He spoke on the different aspect of Basic & Applied Research including Technology Development & Demonstration with reference to the global context. His lecture was popular type with much of thought provoking and futuristic in approach. Shri Bal Krishna proposed the vote of thanks. Later, Prof. S.P. Mehrotra inaugurated newly created the Diamond Jubilee Committee Room.

The main Diamond Jubilee Function will be held tomorrow with different programmes. Several dignitaries, high government officials, scientists, technologists will be attending.
