Dear Senator Billig,

Our Challenger Elementary PTAin Issaquah, Washington, requests that you, as a member of the McCleary Workgroup, promptly and fully comply with the Supreme Court’s orders in the McCleary case.

We recently adopted the enclosed resolution.This resolution does not tell you HOW to meet your Paramount Duty, it simply requests that you finally DO. However, Washington State PTA’s and their 140,000+ members have this guidance for you from our number one legislative priority, Funding McCleary:

“Legislation and policies should not divest funding for health and human services, higher education or early learning programs, nor should it simply redistribute existing education funding sources.

After years of cuts that have diminished opportunities for kids, we need a solution that addresses Washington State's outdated and inequitable tax system.”

We implore you to reach an agreementbefore the legislature returns to Olympia for Assembly Days, November 19th, so Governor Inslee can call for a special session and complete this critical work.

The McCleary Workgroup should recognize it is counterproductive to debate major tax reforms at this time, since they will not be approved by the current senate. Additionally, the workgroup should not be the place to waste debate over Charter Schools and/or your opposition to McCleary. We ask you to focus solely on the much larger financial, policy, and constitutional issues surrounding McCleary.

Washington’s children deserve more from you and they have waited long enough. We, the 395 members of the Challenger Elementary PTA, urge you to get back into legislative session and fulfill your “Constitutional Paramount Duty” to the children of Washington State.
