Literacy and English
/ Reading
ORT
Reading books will be at a pace appropriate to individual reading groups. It is important that children practise their reading at home with an adult or a sibling. They are also encouraged to read with expression.
Children will have access to a range of books daily. They will spend time reading alone or with friends.
We will visit the library on Tuesday afternoons.
Writing
This term we will be focussing on poetry writing. We will be developing our understanding of different types of poetry as we read poems by authors and write our own poems. We will use current topics to support our poetry writing.
We will look at setting in writing. We will develop our knowledge on how settings are described in books and write about various settings using adjectives for description.
This term we are also developing our understanding of how to layout and present information in a poster format, considering what information to include and how we arrange that information.
We will have focussed grammar and handwriting lessons every week.
We will have two spelling sessions a week, one to introduce spelling sounds and one to assess our learning through a weekly spelling test on a Friday.
Listening and Talking will be encouraged through all areas of the curriculum as we discuss topics and ideas with each other. We will also engage in games that will increase our confidence talking in front of our class.
Maths and Numeracy
/ Number work will be focusing on addition and subtraction. We will be learning a variety of mental strategies to add and subtract up to 3 digit numbers as well as a written method to add and subtract larger numbers. We will also be applying these skills through problem solving activities.
Shape – We will be working on shape this term. We will be learning how to identify 3D shapes from their net. We will also learn about parallel and perpendicular lines, as well as other properties of 2D shape. We will develop our knowledge of symmetry, pattern and tiling.
Multiplication – We will practise our times tables every day. Each child has individual times table to practise on and will progress through the tables at their own pace.
Social Studies / People, Past Events and Societies
We will develop our knowledge of Victorians. This term we will look at how children lived in Victorian times focussing on Victorian schools and factories.
Science / We will be exploring and following Blue Planet 2 and developing our understanding of what we watch. We will also learn about Shetland’s seas and the wildlife that lives in it.
Expressive Arts / Art: The class will have art with Mrs Burr on Friday mornings. The class will be looking at Victorian buildings using mixed Media.
Music: The class will have music with Mrs Pottinger on Wednesday mornings. The class will learn about note lengths and rhythms.
Drama: The class will be involved in a whole school Christmas play which will develop their drama skills.
Technologiess
/ We will be learning about computer coding through an ICT programme called ‘scratch’. We will learn how to use algorithms to move a character and create a short animation.
RME / We will look at the Christian celebration of Christmas.
French / We will be learning numbers up to 50 as well as classroom vocabulary. We will also learn some Christmas vocabulary.
Health and Wellbeing / This term we will look at bullying and road safety during Anti-bullying and Road Safety Week. We will also look at internet safety.
P.E.
The class have swimming and P.E with Mr Kirkness on Tuesday.
