Position: SeasonalLaborer II (Traffic Department)

The seasonal Laborer II, in the Traffic Department, is responsible for providing safe travel in the City of Sidney through the maintenance and improvement of its traffic signals, traffic lights, pavement markings, signs and any other items required in the Street Department.
Job Dimensions:
The Street Department is comprised of 6 regular fulltime employees and as many as 7 seasonal and parttime workers. The major functions of the department are comprised of:
General Maintenance
Traffic Control
The Laborer II will mainly be assigned to the Traffic Department.
Nature and Scope:
The Laborer II receives direct work supervision and assignments from the department's foreman and manager. The incumbent will be primarily assigned in the Traffic Department on the Yellow Curb Painting Program. This consists of applying yellow paint on certain curbs where parking is restricted (in front of fire hydrants for example).
The major responsibilities of the Laborer II, in the Traffic Department include:
Performing painting in the Yellow Curb Program.
Performing vegetation removal prior to painting.
Assisting other personnel in the Traffic Department or any other department as needed.
Additional responsibilities may include:
Perform additional construction and maintenance tasks such as concrete work, truck driving, asphalt spreading, jackhammering, patching, crack sealing, and a variety of construction and maintenance activities when equipment is not in use.
Perform minor repairs to equipment and report the needs for major repairs.
Communicate effectively with co-workers and supervisors.
Applying street paint and traffic markings.
Assisting in the installation and repair of traffic signs, signals and equipment.
Effectively use a PC, software and field equipment used by the department in the performance of duties and assignments.
Perform job duties in a safe manner consistent with City policies and procedures.
Perform job duties under stressful conditions including inclement weather or adverse conditions.
When directed, perform work for all divisions within street and traffic as well as any other department with in the City.
Install traffic control at work sites as necessary.
Clean and care for tools and equipment.
Major Challenges:
Efficiently operate a wide range of equipment.
Productively work with minimal supervision.
Maintain mental awareness to avoid potential hazards.
Exercise the necessary safety precautions.
Other Requirements:
Work outdoors and in adverse weather conditions, at times, for the entire workday.
Physically perform the functions of the job including lifting, shoveling, raking, driving, climbing, spraying, weed-whipping, etc.
Drive a pickup truck pulling a trailer.
Work independently in absence of supervisor.
Read and interpret GIS maps and engineering drawings
Understand practices, methods and materials used in construction and maintenance operations
Physically able to perform the duties of the position including walking, crawling, climbing, squatting, lifting up to 80 pounds and physical exertion for extended periods of time
Apply ODOT Work Zone Traffic Control and Safety practices, where applicable, in the performance of job duties
Understand and follow oral and written instructions
Perform a variety of construction and maintenance tasks
Qualifications:
High school graduate or GED equivalent with proof of accomplishment
Must be able to read and write.
Must have a valid driver's license.
