CIHR – Joint Canada-Israel Health Research Program

The organizations funding this Program support the search for breakthroughs in health sciences that have the potential to bring about enduring changes across the globe, including in developing regions. The Initiative will support world-class research teams co-led by Canadian and Israeli investigators. The teams will be expected to integrate researchers from low and middle income countries to further their scientific capacity. In their capacity as collaborators or trainees, researchers from eligible countries will contribute to and benefit from their involvement in the Initiative. https://www.researchnet-recherchenet.ca/rnr16/vwOpprtntyDtls.do?prog=2348&view=currentOpps&type=EXACT&resultCount=25&sort=program&all=1&masterList=true

CIHR – Team Grant – GACD Lung Diseases

This funding opportunity on Implementation Research on the Primary Prevention of Chronic Lung Diseases in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs) is the third joint research program of the Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases (GACD). The GACD was established in 2009 to support research priorities for a coordinated research effort that will address chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs), a growing health crisis now reaching epidemic proportions globally. https://www.researchnet-recherchenet.ca/rnr16/vwOpprtntyDtls.do?prog=2351&view=currentOpps&type=EXACT&resultCount=25&sort=program&all=1&masterList=true HRS internal deadline: February 10, 2016 Full submission deadline: February 24, 2016

CIHR – Project Scheme – 2016 1st Live Pilot Competition

The Project Scheme is designed to capture ideas with the greatest potential to advance health-related knowledge, health research, health care, health systems, and/or health outcomes. It supports projects with a specific purpose and a defined endpoint. The best ideas may stem from new, incremental, innovative, and/or high-risk lines of inquiry or knowledge translation approaches.

CIHR – Team Grant: Big Data on Dementia

The CIHR Dementia Research Strategy (the Strategy) is a CIHR signature initiative which aims to support research on the latest preventive, diagnostic and treatment approaches to Alzheimer's disease and related dementia. Under this Strategy, CIHR is implementing key national and international research initiatives which contribute to the National Dementia Research and Prevention Planintroduced by the Government of Canada in September 2014 in the context of the Global Action Against Dementia initiative spearheaded by the UK. The Strategy was launched in 2009 and encompasses numerous activities and funding initiatives under both the national and international components. The Canadian Consortium on Neurodegeneration in Aging (CCNA) announced in 2014, is the national component of the Strategy and now represents Canada’s centre of excellence in neurodegeneration research comprising 20 teams more than 350 researchers, eight platforms spanning all neurodegenerative diseases that have an impact on cognition.

CIHR – JPIAMR 3rd Joint Call on Transmission Dynamics

The primary aim of the third joint call of Joint Programming Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance (JPIAMR) is to combine the resources, infrastructures, and research strengths of multiple countries in order to address transmission of antibiotic resistance following a ‘One Health Approach’.

An organism develops resistance to a drug either by a gene mutation or by the acquisition of genetic components from another strain (i.e. transmission of resistance). Resistant organisms can multiply in the presence of a drug (i.e. selection of resistance traits) but without transmission, resistance would remain an isolated problem. To understand the complex biological and environmental interactions that shape the spread of antibiotic resistance, we must identify and characterize the determinants that contribute to the spread of resistance in and between different reservoirs; including humans (sick and healthy people), animals (livestock, companion and wild animals) and the environment (indoor and outdoor). Investigating the complex biology and epidemiology of selection and transmission of resistance is crucial in order to design preventive measures to address this public threat. The success and abundance of antibiotic resistant bacterial strains with particular public health importance should be determined through the development of risk assessment approaches that are based on the genomic repertoire of bacterial pathogens and the ecological constraints that determine their fitness in clinical, community, modelers, medical practitioners (human and veterinary), etc., where appropriate. Consortia are encouraged to include participants from academia, medical and public health practitioners (both human and veterinary), policy makers, and industry, where appropriate (please note the national/regional regulations).
