JOB DESCRIPTION

Post Title:Experienced Staff Nurse

Grade:Band 6

Salary Scale:£24,549.60 - £35,747 per annum inclusive.

Annual Leave: 27 days per annum plus bank holidays.

Hours:37.5 per week

Responsible To:Sister, Neonatal Unit

Accountable To:Senior Nurse Manager, Neonatal Unit

Job Summary

To utilise and further develop specialist skills in order to provide the highest standard of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of individualised patient care. To promote a friendly and supportive atmosphere for parents and relatives in which they can learn to care for their babies. To utilise a variety of strategies to communicate effectively with the neonate’s family/carers, the multidisciplinary team, other departments with the Trust and pertinent agencies outside the organisation. To actively participate in and contribute to the management of the clinical area. To act as a mentor, teaching and supervising junior staff including, student nurses, student midwives, and health care support workers.

  1. Clinical Responsibilities

1.1Using evidence-based practice and a holistic approach to individualised nursing care, assess plan, implement and evaluate care for babies within a defined clinical area.

1.2To actively support and promote the involvement of parents/carers in the planning, management and evaluation of care by working together in partnership.

1.3To establish and maintain effective communications with parents and relatives, from admission, ensuring they have sufficient confidence, assistance and support to enable them to care for their baby in preparation for discharge.

1.4To be an advocate for the neonate and to promote good liaisons and effective communication with all members of the multi disciplinary team.

1.5To adhere to and actively participate in the regular review of nursing practice, policies, procedures and protocols.

1.6To safely administer prescribed medications and to monitor their effects.

1.7To ensure competency and safe maintenance of all medical devices within the sphere of responsibility.

1.8To participate in research projects.

1.9To assist and supervise in the orientation of new staff and learners to the Unit.

1.10To actively promote Health Education in the Unit.

  1. Education, Training and Personal Development

2.1To attend and participate in the in-service multidisciplinary teaching programme as well as the Trust Mandatory training.

2.2To keep abreast with all aspects of Neonatal Nursing, current research and clinical developments.

2.3To be responsible for the appraisal of own performance, identifying training and development needs.

2.4To demonstrate and build on achieved competencies in neonatal nursing.

2.5To develop and utilise clinical supervision and reflective practice skills.

2.6To participate in the education and act as link assessor for student nurses/midwives by acting as mentor/preceptor/role model and through discussion, supervised practice and tutorials.

  1. Management of Resources

3.1To assist the senior (lead) nurse in managing the resources required in the provision of neonatal care.

3.2To participate in departmental meeting.

3.3To participate in all aspects of clinical governance.

  1. Professional Responsibilities

4.1To maintain personal records of continuing professional development in order to meet PREP requirements.

4.2To promote a professional image at all times and to accountable for own clinical practice.

4.3To ensure appropriate documentation of care is in accordance with NMC guidelines.

4.4To act in accordance with the NMC Professional Code of Conduct for Nurse, Midwives and Health Visitors.

4.5To ensure confidentiality at all times, only relating confidential information obtained during the course of employment to those acting in an official capacity.

  1. General Duties

5.1The duties and responsibilities of the post will be in accordance with policies and practice of ………..Healthcare Trust, which the Trust may amend from time to time. It is the nurse’s responsibility to remain up to date with these and other Trust policies and procedures.

5.2Particular note must be made to Health & Safety regulations, the reporting of fires, major incidents and untoward clinical incidents.

5.3To be aware of and act in line with the requirements of the Data Protection Act. This includes obtaining, processing or using information held on computer in a fair and lawful way, to hold date only for the specified registered purposes and to use and disclose data to authorised persons or organisations as instructed.

5.4To undertake such duties that may be required that are consistent with the responsibilities of the grade and the needs of the service.
