Iowa Cancer Consortium Event to Address the Cost of Cancer and the Impact on Quality of Life

Spring Meeting Scheduled for Next Day

The Iowa Cancer Consortium, a partnership of Iowans working together to reduce the burden of cancer in the state, will hold two events this week: The Cost of Cancer & the Impact on Quality of Life conference, and its annual Spring Meeting.

The Cost of Cancer & the Impact on Quality of Life (Conference):

-WHAT: TheCost of Cancer Conferenceis for health care professionals, including social workers and nurse navigators, who work directly with patients to address financial needs and concerns. Speakers will discuss the burden of financial toxicity on cancer patients and address methods of identifying patients most at risk. The afternoon will include discussion with scenarios to examine available resources for patients and how to access them. Click here to access the conference agenda.

-WHEN: March 30, 2016 from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

-WHY: Facing a cancer diagnosis can be a financial and emotional burden on cancer patients and loved ones. This conference will provide information, tools and resources for professionals to assist cancer patients and their loved ones with addressing these burdens.

-HIGHLIGHTS:

-Mary Schroeder, PhD, Assistant Professor in the Division of Health Services Research at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy, will present Contralateral Prophylactic Mastectomies: Expected and Unexpected Costs at 9:30 a.m.

-Jonas de Souza, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Section of Hematology/Oncology at The University of Chicago Medical Center, will present Financial Toxicity in Cancer Care: A Matter of Life and Debt at 10:45 a.m.

-Starting at 1:00 p.m., there will be a discussion with case studies to examine available resources for patients and how to access them.

2016 Iowa Cancer Consortium Spring Meeting:

-WHAT: An annual meeting of Consortium members to network and discuss cancer prevention, screening, treatment and survivorship in Iowa. Click here to access the meeting agenda.

-HIGHLIGHTS:

-A Prevention and Screening session will be held at 10:30 a.m. and will include presentations by: 1) Heather Meador, RN, BSN, Senior Public Health Nurse for Linn County Public Health, Coalition Chair for Linn County Immunization Coalition, and a member of the Iowa Immunization Coalition Board of Directors, on the Linn County HPV Initiative; 2) Zach Young, Principal Planner, Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, on Complete Streets for Greater Des Moines; and 3) Jorge Zapatier, MD, Mercy Gastroenterology Clinic, Mercy—Des Moines, on Mercy Clinics Colorectal Cancer Screening Initiative.

-Richard M. Hoffman, MD, MPH, Professor of Internal Medicine and Epidemiology, Director of the Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, and Co-Leader of the Cancer Epidemiology and Population Science Program at the University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, will present Translating Research into Practice: The Example of Lung Cancer Screening at 11:45 a.m.

-A Treatment and Quality of Life session will be held at 1:00 p.m. and will include presentations by 1) Stephanie Gilbertson-White, PhD, ARNP, Assistant Professor at the University of Iowa College of Nursing, on Developing an eHealth Intervention Cancer Symptom Management in Rural Iowa; 2) Rachel Schramm, MS, CHES, Program Manager of the Comprehensive Cancer Control Program at the Iowa Department of Public Health on The Importance of Tobacco Cessation Services for Cancer Survivor; and 3) Mary Charlton, PhD, Assistant Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Iowa College of Public Health, and Co-Investigator at the State Health Registry of Iowa, on Adolescent and Young Adult Cancers in Iowa.
