OMNICOM LAUNCHES 3rd MEDIA NETWORK: H&S

PROCTER & GAMBLE IS FIRST CLIENT

Add Hearts & Science (H&S) to the list of major media agency networks in the advertising industry. The third network deployed by Omnicom Media Group is already a major force because its first client is the biggest advertiser of all—Procter & Gamble. Omnicom won the P&G U.S. account in December and has been assembling the new unit to handle the business—although H&S will be soliciting other clients as well.

"With the addition of Hearts & Science, Omnicom Media Group has three distinct agency brands all focused on driving client business results," saysDaryl Simm, CEO, Omnicom Media Group. "OMD is the world's largest and most creatively awarded media agency; PHD is the global leader in communications planning; Hearts & Science will be highly focused on data driven marketing. All three agency networks benefit from the full scale of Omnicom Media Group's activation and buying resources and our industry-leading Annalect data and analytics platform."

Scott Hagedornmoves over from Annalect to become CEO of H&S. At Annalect, he’ll be succeeded bySlavi Samardzijaas global CEO andErin Mattsas North American CEO. Samardzija and Matts move into their new roles from their former positions as Annalect's Chief Analytics Officer and Chief Marketing Officer, respectively.

According to H&S Chief Operating OfficerKathleen Brookbanks, who joins the new agency from sister shop OMD, the agency will open its 7 World Trade Center facility in Manhattan with a staff of 175, a number that is expected to top 300 by the beginning of Q3. Additional offices will open starting shortly starting withCanadaandPuerto Rico, followed by a number of key markets outside ofNorth Americain the second half of 2016. Additional executive hires, “recruited from leading companies across the technology, publishing and agency industries,” will be announced in the coming weeks.

TRYING TO SKIP THE STARTER HOME

As peak homebuying season begins, first-time homebuyers are prioritizing their long-term residential needs, according to the inauguralBank of AmericaHomebuyer Insights Report. The survey finds that 75% of first-time buyers would prefer to bypass the starter home and purchase a place that will meet their future needs, even if that means waiting to save more, and 35% plan to retire there.

The reality may be somewhat different. Three-quarters of experienced buyers said they sacrificed something the last time they bought a home, including travel (46%) or a new car (37%), and 32% said they sacrificed some of the features they would have liked in their dream home.Additionally, buyers who have a plan in place for purchasing a home are more willing to consider a starter home than “someday” buyers who know they want to buy a home in the future, but don’t have a plan for doing so (41% vs. 23%). 77% of “someday” buyers would prefer to wait and move into a nicer home in the future.

Aspirational and emotional factors motivate more than three-quarters of first-time homebuyers. The report also finds that the same number of homebuyers consider saving for or paying off a home (92%) as important as saving for retirement (91%). 85% of first-time homebuyers would use a tool that automatically withdrew money from their paycheck to save up for a home purchase.

Two-thirds of first-time millennial homebuyers say they expect some kind of assistance from their parents when buying a home, ranging from financial support to assistance moving in.More than half of first-time buyers are looking for a home in the suburbs. 37% of first-time buyers said they would rather spend money on a mortgage than rent, 36% said they want more space, 17% plan to have a child, and 14% are getting married.

FACEBOOK OKs SPONSORED CONTENT

Media companies and others can now be approved by Facebook to post branded content paid for by advertisers. In explaining the policy change, Facebook’s official blog noted that “branded content was one of the first forms of television marketing when soap operas were created and sponsored by brand in the 1930s” (although we suspect they really mean radio). A new tool from Facebook allows publishers to tag a marketer in a branded content post. For brands and marketers, Facebook says the new tool will provide transparency. Marketers can access engagement and reach metrics for their sponsored content.

DANGEROUS DIGITAL POLITICAL TERRITORY

When a political campaign or PAC buys a TV schedule, they know what content the ad will appear with. What about the adjacent content when they buy digital video advertising? Digital Citizens Alliance researchers found ads for Presidential candidates and their supporting Super PACs next to YouTube videos that extol terrorism, push stolen credit card numbers and hacked materials, and demonstrate how to use and spread malware built to take control of computers.

Making online searches in New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Virginia in the days before the primaries there, the researchers found political ads from multiple candidates next to videos pushing illegal, illicit and dangerous activities.

“It’s hard to imagine why anyone would buy advertising time in a television show that calls on Muslims to attack non-Muslims and attempt a world takeover. And, of course, Hillary Clinton would never buy an ad that shows up during a search for Ketamine, widely known as a ‘date rape’ drug. But that is exactly what is happening, time and time again, on YouTube without the candidates’ knowledge,” the report states.

HYUNDAI RECALLS SONATAS

Hyundai announced a recall of most of its 2001 Sonata midsize sedans to fix a glitch that could cause a loss of power steering. Some 173,000 cars are covered by the recall.

Charter said in an investor presentation for a bond sale that it would pay $11.4 billion for Bright House, up $1 billion, or 9.6%, fromthe $10.4 billion purchase price announced in May 2015.
