LET US LEAD THE WAY

ROTARY THIS WEEK – JANUARY 11

Our speaker will be Mr. Charles T. Heberle III, President of The Citizenship Project and You the PEOPLE, a company founded in 1991. This organization seeks to improve the citizenship awareness and involvement of Americans and other democratic citizens. The You the PEOPLE program, which was developed and copyrighted by Mr. Heberle, trains citizens to use a small group process to improve their skills and capabilities so they can fully participate in the democratic process in their community. The Citizenship Project sponsors lectures and training programs on behalf of effective citizen participation. The student version of You the PEOPLE is used in over 1700 high schools nationwide. It is now being used to help create a new civic education training system for the Russian Federation.

ROTARY LAST WEEK – JANUARY 4

PRESIDENT DENISE, AL WILSON and DAN O’NEILL, opened our meeting.

We welcomed Ron Keech, guest of HELEN MOULTON. Actually, BRENDA MORRIS introduced Ron as Helen was detained. Journalistic etiquette prevents me from using the words that Brenda used to introduce Ron. Let’s just say that Ron is and “man” who loves his “toy” car.

CLUB NOTES

GEORGE DEPTULA - Many members attended the memorial service for George held on Friday, January 5, at the Friday at First Parish Church in Harvard Square. It is amazing to discover new information on the life of our fellow member. George, the teacher, Deptula was highly respected and loved by generations of students he inspired at Buckingham, Browne & Nichols School.

MALLORY SLATE brought two attractive aircraft calendars to the meeting. Mallory wanted the calendars to be auctioned with the proceeds to benefit the Education Fund in memory of GEORGE. DAN O’NEILL conducted the auction, which raised $200 for the fund. HELEN MOULTON placed a winning bid of $100 and MANNY ROGERS matched the gift in order to claim the 2nd calendar. Thank you Helen and Manny for your contribution to the fund.

Donations to the Education Fund can always be made to honor GEORGE DEPTULA or any other friend or associate of a Rotarian. Donations can be made ‘In Memory of” or “In Honor of.”

BRENDA MORRIS & DON LEWIS – Thank you for your contributions to the Rotary Foundation.

SCOTT GRIGGS, chair of our host committee for the 2007 Group Study Exchange, reports that the GSE Team from India will arrive on March 1. Cambridge Rotarians will host them during their brief stay in Cambridge. Scott is forming his committee and seeking assistance from members. Full details will be in the next issued of Fellowship News.

Thank you MICHAEL SIMON for sending in your makeup card. I doubt any Cambridge Rotarian has attended a Rotary meeting so far from Cambridge. Michael can verify that Rotary is in every corner of the world.

Here is a photograph of Michael visiting the Rotary club of Punta Arenas in southern Chile, very close to Cape Horn. I wonder how many miles Punta Arenas is from Cambridge? Come to Rotary and give us the answer.

PROGRAM

We enjoyed one of the most interesting and inspiring programs that we have had in recent years at Rotary.

Alan Crane a venture partner at Polaris Venture Partners spoke about his work in the bio-medical field. Alan spoke of the formation of a new but promising biotech company. Tempo was formed in April 2006 to focus on cancer research. Currently the company has seven employees but is looking to grow in the future.

Using a Power Point presentation Alan was able to describe the effort by the company to impact cancer cells thereby eliminating the cancer and saving the life of the patient. My lack of knowledge of the process prevents me for properly explaining the mission of Tempo. Basically, the research is focusing the development of a “very small particle” that contains time delay ingredients that will impact a cell area after the initial ingredient works to destroy the cancer.”

Anyway, it was a fascinating presentation that will be remembered for a long time. Alan agreed to return to Rotary in about 18 months to update us on the status of the research being performed by Tempo.

See you at RYLES on Thursday.
