Inspector Certification Program

  • Qualification requirements prior to receiving certification include:
  • Completing a comprehensive 2-day (12-hour) onsite wastewater treatment systems course covering terminology, treatment, tanks, construction methods, applications, and inspection training
  • Or, demonstrating competence in the field
  • An exam score of 70 or above to required to receive a national inspector certification
  • The national certification is good for two (2) years from the date of the completed certification training session
  • Registration procedures and fees will be managed by the association sponsoring the training or by the NAWT office per their mutual agreement. If NAWT does not collect the registration fees, the sponsoring Association will be invoiced by NAWT for Fifty Dollars ($50.00) per individual taking the course.
  • This fee will cover the cost of the training manual, handouts, exam, exam grading, certificate, and two years of listing on the NAWT website registry.
  • Exams will be prepared by the NAWT Education Program Coordinator or delegate. Exams will be updated annually or as the NAWT Education Program Coordinator deems appropriate.
  • Training instructors must remit exams to the Education Program Coordinator within 7 days of the exam date for grading and/or review.
  • The sponsoring Association may grade the exams beforeremitting them to the Education Program Coordinator for review.
  • The Education Program Coordinator should mail the graded exams to the Executive Director for entry into the NAWT database within thirty (30) days of the exam date.
  • The Executive Director will enter the participant’s exam score, the session training ID, certificationexpiration date, and their website registry preference into the NAWT database (FileMaker Pro 10).
  • Each training session will be given a different ID number, which will include the training session date and location (city and state).
  • The certification expiration date will fall on the last day of the month, two years after the exam date.
  • Contact information for the web registry will include business or individual’s name, address, and telephone number(s) as provided by the individual.
  • The Executive Director will send each successful participant an“Inspector Certification Certificate” and a certification card that containsan expiration date. A certification cover letter will accompany all certificates. Certificates should be received within 4-6 weeks after exam date.
  • Certificate to be printed on C22493 Crest Baronial Ivory, 80 LB stock or equivalent
  • 2” x 3” Certification card to by printed on LBC2493 Crest Baronial Ivory, 65 LB stock or equivalent
  • Cover letter on 8x11 white paper
  • All documents placed into 9x12 envelopes (landscape format) and mailed
  • If a participant receives a failing exam score, the Executive Directoris tosend a failure letter stating that they will not be granted certification and informing them of their options to retake the exam after completing additional training.
  • A charge of $35 is payable to NAWT to cover cost of the exam
  • The Executive Director will store the exams for 6 months to 1 year and destroy them per the retention and destruction policy.
  • The Executive Director or Education Program Coordinator is in charge of setting up training sessions on request of state associations or agencies. Where state associations are conducting NAWT programs, they set the schedule with their trainers and inform the Executive Director and Education Program Coordinator for inclusion in NAWT advertising.
  • It is anticipated that NAWT will enter into a Memorandum of Understanding with hosting organizations to work together to further the viability of the Decentralized Wastewater option.

Inspector Recertification Program

  • Recertification for the national inspector certification will be required every two (2) years.
  • Must obtain eight (8) continuing education credit hours for recertification
  • The Executive Director will mail acertification renewal notice requesting additional training documentation six (6) months prior to the participant’s anniversary date.
  • Course completion documentation may consist of a certificate or some other official document or letter
  • Request for approval for non-NAWT sponsored courses should be submitted before the event.
  • A subcommittee of three (3) representatives from the Education Committee will review requests for approval.
  • Continuing education training not pre-approved by the Education Committee may or may not be acceptable at the Education Committee’s discretion.
  • Allowable continuing education course credit hours must pertain directly to onsite wastewater treatment systems. This may includeonsite treatment system:
  • inspection
  • design and/or installation
  • operation an/or maintenance
  • A certificate or some other proof of attendance must be supplied with the course application
  • Continuing education credit hours obtained from the follow training classes will not be accepted or approve:
  • proprietary sessions
  • business and marketing sessions, or
  • municipal treatment plant
  • Certified individuals may submit continuing education or training documentation any time during this two-year period.
  • Only those training sessions occurring 6 months or more after the participant’s anniversary date (date of most current certification exam) will be counted towards the necessary continuing education requirement.
  • After the certification’s expiration date, a one (1) year grace period is allowed for obtaining the necessary continuing education credits. If received after the grace period, recertification cannot be granted and the individual must begin the certification process as if he/she had never taken the initial NAWT inspector training class.
  • Credit hours for each certified individual will be entered into the Association’s database by the Executive Director.
  • Upon an individual’s anniversary date, the Executive Director will mail a recertification certificate, card, and cover letter indicating the individual’s new expiration date, but only if the continuing education requirements have been satisfied.
  • For non-members of NAWT, an invoice for $150 to cover the two-year certification period will be included for taking non-NAWT sponsored courses
  • For members of NAWT, an invoice for $35 to cover the two-year certification period will be included for taking non-NAWT sponsored courses
  • The new recertification expiration date will be calculated by adding two years to the previous anniversary date (exam date)
