Management: Works closely in team and together with CRAT management team members and reports to the Medical Director under the overall supervision of the Executive Director

Contract duration: One year initial contract with possibility of extension

Terms and conditions: Terms and conditions are specified in the conditions of employment of CRAT personnel.

Background Information:

The Center for Rehabilitation and Abolition of Trauma and Torture (CRAT) is a Human Rights and Community Mental Health organization with offices in Yaoundé (headquarters) and Bamenda. CRAT is a legalized, independent, non-governmental health, social service and human rights organization. CRAT began its operation in 2000 as a response to the psychosocial consequences of torture, war and other acts of organized violence on individuals, groups, families/couples and communities in Cameroon. CRAT provides treatment and rehabilitation services (counseling, psychosocial support and mental health care interventions) amongst people who have been traumatized as a result of war, torture and other forms of organized violence as well to prevent human rights violation through advocacy, public education and collaboration with international and national organizations. CRAT seeks to provide care and support to victims of torture (refugees, asylum seekers, adults, adolescents, prisoners and children).

CRAT’s work is carried out from two centers located within Yaoundé and Bamenda. The Yaoundé centre operates as the “head office” of the organization. Senior managers, the board, and the financial manager operate from there. All fundraising currently happens from this site and it is hear that reports are compiled and sent out. In terms of service provision, the Yaoundé centre offers clinic services as well as an outreach and education service through the Red Cross. The Yaoundé clinic targets refugee victims of torture and gross human rights abuse referred largely from United Nations High Commissioner of Refugees, Red Cross, range of local and international organizations, Caritas as well as government Ministries. Clients are registered, assessed, provided with drugs as necessary, given supportive counseling, group counseling and other western approaches related to treatment as well as referrals to specialist hospitals and centers. Within the Yaoundé outreach programme, the medical staff also conducts mobile clinics and outreach and provide psycho educational talk to groups of refugees at the Red Cross. Group programs to encourage healing and support among attending refugees are also conducted such as story telling, drama, dance, relaxation techniques are used.

1- Medical Doctor

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Medical Doctor will:

-  Provide care and treatment of physical after effects of forced migration, war, torture and other forms of systematic violence,

-  Organize treatment, education, supervision and planning activities for medical staff members,

-  Assist the reporting system of the Medical staff,

-  Provide professional support to project staff,

-  Write medical report of clients,

-  Review and discharge clients,

-  Refer patients to see specialists,

-  Direct and coordinate activities of all medical staff,

-  Collect, record, and maintain patient information such as medical history, reports and examination results,

-  Treat refugees and asylum seekers in hospitals and mobile clinics.

Requirements:

-  At least two years of relevant work experience is required with the Government,

-  Fluency in working in English and French,

-  Good working knowledge of people suffering from trauma,

-  Good management and leadership skills,

-  Must be a registered medical doctor in Cameroon,

-  Must be able to work independently, look at situations from a fresh perspective and use your creativity to solve problems,

-  Must be able to deal with unforeseen, often stressful and difficult situations.

2- Psychologist

Duties and responsibilities

The Psychologist will:

-  Offer Psychological support to refugees and asylum seekers,

-  Offer information sessions on trauma and health problems occurring after traumatisation and various reactions to trauma etc…

-  Conduct interviews with refugees at the CRAT Center as well as the Cameroon Red Cross,

-  Organize group therapies and self help groups for refugee populations,

-  Assess cases of psychological torture on refugees and provide needed support as well as referral,

-  Organize community base activities such as drama, songs, play activities, sports, debates and other recreational activities.

Requirements

-  At least two years of relevant work experience as a clinical psychologist or any related field in giving therapy,

-  Fluency in working in English and French,

-  Good working knowledge of people suffering from trauma,

-  Good management and leadership skills,

-  Have work experience in clinical social work/psychology, psychotherapy, psychiatry/social psychiatry or community-work.

3- Psychiatric Nurse

Duties and responsibilities

The Psychiatric Nurse will:

-  Implement and improve treatment programmes for patients with conflict-related problems such as stress, trauma, and domestic or sexual violence,

-  Provide patients with mental health care and psychosocial support,

-  Assist the Psychologist in conducting interviews, provide health education, organize group therapies and self help groups,

-  Respond to mental health emergency in the community and in the hospital,

-  Ensure proper filing of all cases,

-  Dispense Psychiatric drugs,

-  Provide high quality mental health care to refugees,

-  Participate in all planning, educational and supervision activities,

-  Identify the needs for medication in the field and assist with their procurement.

Requirements

-  Good command of English and French Language,

-  Vocational training trained in mental health care and work experience in psychiatry, clinical social work/psychology, psychotherapy, psychiatry/social psychiatry or community-psychiatric nursing.

-  Two years of experience in giving therapy and have demonstrable experience in clinical treatment of clients with trauma,

-  Experience with community-oriented approaches, training and supervising staff, designing training programmes and context-oriented information material,

-  Ability to work independently and possess a talent for organization and to look at situations from a fresh perspective and use your creativity to solve problems,

-  Ability to deal with unforeseen, often stressful and difficult situations,

-  Hands-on experience working with children facing mental health issues and work experience in a similar non-governmental organisation in Cameroon.

4- -State Registered Nurses

Duties and Responsibilities

The State Registered Nurses will:

-  Interview patients to obtain medical information and measure their vital signs, weight and height,

-  Show patients to examination rooms and prepare them for the physician,

-  Record patients' medical history, vital statistics and information such as test results in medical records,

-  Prepare and administer medications as directed by the physician,

-  Collect blood, tissue or other laboratory specimens, log the specimens, and prepare them for testing,

-  Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets and physicians' instructions to patients,

-  Help physicians examine and treat patients, handing them instruments and materials or performing such tasks as giving injections or removing sutures,

-  Authorize drug refills and provide prescription information to pharmacies,

-  Prepare treatment rooms for patient examinations, keeping the rooms neat and clean,

-  Clean and sterilize instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies,

-  Observe, analyze, and record patients' participation, reactions, and progress during treatment sessions, modifying treatment programs as needed,

-  Develop treatment plan to meet needs of patient, based on needs assessment, patient interests and objectives of therapy,

-  Encourage clients with special needs and circumstances to acquire new skills and get involved in health-promoting leisure activities, such as sports, games, arts and crafts, and gardening,

-  Counsel and encourage patients to develop leisure activities,

-  Confer with members of treatment team to plan and evaluate therapy programs,

-  Conduct therapy sessions to improve patients' mental and physical well-being,

-  Instruct patient in activities and techniques, such as sports, dance, music, art or relaxation techniques, designed to meet their specific physical or psychological needs,

-  Obtain information from medical records, medical staff, family members and the patients themselves to assess patients' capabilities, needs and interests,

-  Plan, organize, direct and participate in treatment programs and activities to facilitate patients' rehabilitation, help them integrate into the community and prevent further medical problems,

-  Prepare and submit reports and charts to treatment team to reflect patients' reactions and evidence of progress or regression.

Requirements

-  Good command of English and French Language,

-  Have a valid State Registered nursing and at least 2 years post-qualification nursing experience,

-  Ability to use computer programmes such as Word and Excel.

-  Be a good organizer with ability to work independently,

-  Be innovative with ability to implement ideas in a practical way,

-  Ability to deal with unforeseen, often stressful and difficult situations,

-  Have some hands-on nursing experience in basic health care, nutrition, infectious diseases, pediatrics, obstetrics, HIV/AIDS, working in an operating theatre, accident and emergency department or work experience in a similar non-governmental organisation in Cameroon.
