COURSE PREREQUISITES: None

Course description: This is a course of study examining the variables that determine good personal health, how to identify the various hosts that can cause disease, how to prevent disease, and to become aware of the various community sites that help with or support the community with health challenges. With speakers from the community, reading the text book, taking field trips in the surrounding area of Tulsa, and completing a research paper on some aspect of health, the students should become more aware of health promotions and the challenges of health on a personal level as well as the community’s.

Course Objectives: IN ORDER TO ATTAIN GOOD MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH ONE MUST LEARN IT IS ON GOING PROCESS AND NOT ABSENCEOF DISEASE. some OF THE OBJECTIVES ARE:

1.  To realize the importance of physical fitness and lifetime sports for healthier living by reading the text, listening, and participating in discussions of the subject.

2.  To learn how to manage weight and avoid obesity which may help reduce the many health problems associated with too much fat.

3.  To identify some dietary practices associated with good health/weight

4.  To learn how to identify stress and learn ways to deal with stress.

5.  To learn how Basal Metabolic Rate affects caloric intake.

6.  To recognize the Body Mass Index as a tool for good health.

7.  To recognize the various stressors to the human body such as: cigarette smoking/second hand smoke, radiation, tanning beds use, abuse of alcohol, inactivity, use of legal and illegal drugs, improper lifting, overuse of refined sugars and use of artificial sugars and lipids.

8.  To become familiar with special types of doctors, choice of insurances in the health field, nursing homes, assisted living homes, funeral home challenges, health sites that promote good health like Planned Parenthood, dental agencies, breast centers, and Center for the Physically Limited to name a few.

Teaching Methods: Participation in discussion, attending field trips, writing a research paper, listening to instructor, reading text, and outside speakers.

EVALUATION TECHNIQUES:

For this class, students will primarily be graded on their research paper. (200 points)

Students’ knowledge gained from outside speakers, assigned readings, and on the field trips, will comprise the final . (100 points)

IF the students, individually and /or as a whole ,fail to involve themselves in the field trips and class discussions, the instructor will revert to assigning chapters and testing over chapter readings. (SEE BELOW FOR TESTING SCHEDULE WILL BE USED ONLY IF NEEDED)

NO MAKE UP TESTS . A MISSED EXAM WILL REQUIRE STUDENTS TO TAKE A ZERO

rESEARCH PAPER: 200 POINTS – MUST HAVE AN APPROVED TOPIC, 3-5 PAGES IN LENGTH, ANOTHER PAGE FOR A wORK cITED PAGE, DOUBLE SPACED, FONTS 12-14, MARGINS ABOUT 2 INCHES. mUST HAVE AT LEAST 4 REFERENCES; NO BOOKS; 2 PROFESSIONAL SOURCES, THE OTHER 2 FROM MAGAZINES, NEWSPAPER, AND PAMPLETS.

Course Withdrawal: The deadline to withdraw from a course shall not exceed 3/4 the duration of any class. Contact the Counseling Office at any TCC campus to initiate withdrawal from a course ('W' grade) or to change from Credit to Audit. Check the TCC Academic Calendar for deadlines. Students who stop participating in the course and fail to withdraw may receive a course grade of “F,” which may have financial aid consequences for the student.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: Academic dishonesty (cheating) is defined as the deception of others about one’s own work or about the work of another. Academic dishonesty or misconduct is not condoned or tolerated at campuses within the Tulsa Community College system. Tulsa Community College adopts a policy delegating certain forms of authority for disciplinary action to the faculty. Such disciplinary actions delegated to the faculty include, but are not limited to, the dismissal of disrespectful or disorderly students from classes. In the case of academic dishonesty a faculty member may:

§  Require the student to redo an assignment or test, or require the student to complete a substitute assignment or test;

§  Record a "zero" for the assignment or test in question;

§  Recommend to the student that the student withdraw from the class, or administratively withdraw the student from the class;

§  Record a grade of "F" for the student at the end of the semester. Faculty may request that disciplinary action be taken against a student at the administrative level by submitting such a request to the Dean of Student Services.
