Position created to assist in revamping expanded features section. Co-supervised staff of seven reporters in editing and planning. Responsible for headline writing, copy editing, layout and design for daily, Sunday, and special sections. Created travel section. Section received first place for lifestyle pages in 1986 from Wisconsin Newspaper Association (WNA).

* Features editor and reporter, Wausau Daily Herald, Wausau, WI. 1982-1985,

Hired as features reporter and promoted (1983) to features editor. Supervised reporters and developed bank of local columnists/contributors. Created Sunday features section and weekly cooking section. Won first place feature writing in 1984; section won first place for feature/lifestyle section awards in 1985 from WNA.

Teaching experience

*Adjunct faculty, American University, Washington, DC, 1990-2000.

- Lecturer, “Writing for Mass Communication,” School of Communication, fall and spring semesters 1990-1999; fall semester 2000. Developed course syllabus, exercises and assignments for skills-based course required of all communications majors. Students were instructed in how to write print news stories, press releases and basic broadcast stories. Participated in training and curriculum development sessions with Writing for Mass Communication adjuncts.

- Intern adviser, Washington Journalism Semester, spring 1997. Advised about 20 visiting college students as they pursued and completed journalism internships. Group sessions focused on developing short- and long-term career goals.

- Instructor, Media in America, summer journalism program for high school students, 1994-1996, American University. With co-instructors, developed curriculum, including readings, written assignments, field trips, guest lecturers for three-week intensive program that focused on relationship between media and federal government. Students earned two college credits.

* Teacher (volunteer), Our Lady of the Americas Church, Washington, DC, 1994-1997. Taught English as a second language to Latino adults. Met weekly (September through June) with recent immigrants, most from South and Central America, to adapt to U.S. culture, understand the English language and improve pronunciation and grammar. Created assignments and exercises. Attended in-house and citywide workshops on pedagogy and teaching strategies.

Special projects/publications

* News in the Next Century, a project managed and published by the Radio and Television News Directors Foundation (RTNDF) and supported by the Robert R. McCormick Tribune Foundation. The project examined the impact of technologies used to gather and deliver the news. RTNDF’s mission is to promote excellence in electronic journalism through research, education and professional training.

-author, teacher’s guide, “Geography Connections,” 1993, as part of classroom materials for grades 4-8. The curriculum was developed with input from USA TODAY and the National Geographic Society to meet (then-) recent criteria specified by the National Assessment of Educational Progress. The guide drew from scientists at a number of federal agencies, including the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and educators with the National Science Teachers Association and National Council for the Social Studies. Also contributed to follow-up projects, including a USA TODAY-Delta Airlines promotional campaign to introduce Geography Connections into classrooms worldwide.
