Dr. ir. Roeland CE Kindt

2003 – Present

Conducting research and training on options for landscape diversification in Kenya, Uganda and Mali. The activities are carried out within the framework of a VVOB (Flanders, Belgium) project “Testing options and training partners in participatory tree domestication and marketing in East Africa” and within the “Enhanced utilisation of tree diversity at the landscape level” project of the Trees and Markets Thematic programme of the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF), both lead by Roeland Kindt. The projects aim at testing options of tree diversification at farm and landscape levels, investigating pathways for inter- and intraspecific diversification using a range of ecological, participatory, genetic, participatory and educational approaches, in collaborative research with farmers, NGOs, Community-based organisations and governmental organisations. The projects have resulted in a range of educational resources such as the “Tree Biodiversity Analysis” manual, the toolkit for “Agroforestry Tree Seeds for Farmers” and the Biodiversity.R free software package for biodiversity analysis. Although these resources were developed for group and individual training events in East Africa, they can be used globally.

1998 – 2002

Conducted research on the local management of tree species diversity in six sites in Kenya, Uganda, Cameroon and Nigeria. This research led to the concept of landscape domestication currently utilised by the International Centre of Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF). After an initial phase of inventorying tree species diversity in targeted landscapes, farmers were interviewed about their strategies of tree diversity management. The approach enables designing landscape-scale interventions that aim at diversifying agroecosystems to provide a wider range of options to farmers and providing the ecological link between diversity of an ecosystem and its productivity and stability. The thesis also focused on conservation-through-use of indigenous tree species in mosaic landscapes and introduced some new metapopulation dynamics simulations. The landscape diversification approach is based on the Integrated Natural Resource Management agenda of ICRAF. The research indicated fragmentation in tree composition and in ethnobotanical knowledge so that wider distribution of species and information within a landscape would already result in substantial increments in diversity.

This research was compiled into a Ph.D. thesis Methodology for Tree Species Diversification in African Agroecosystems to obtain the degree of doctor in applied biological sciences promoted by Prof. Dr. ir. Patrick Van Damme and co-promoted by Dr. Tony Simons. After finalising the doctoral programme at the University of Gent in December 2001, the Ph.D. manuscript was successfully defended (unanimous vote of 12-member committee) on 6th May 2002. Several articles based on the 15 chapters of the Ph.D. have been submitted to peer-reviewed international journals. Although the aim of the thesis was to plan diversification of the target landscapes, several new methods and programmes to analyze landscape diversity and genetic diversity dynamics were developed which could benefit biodiversity research in other locations.

1994 – 2002

Was seconded to ICRAF’s Tree Domestication Programme as ethnobotanist (associate scientist) by the Flemish Association for Development Assistance and technical Co-operation (VVOB, headquarters in Brussels). Assisted in planning and executing range-wide collection-expeditions of the genetic diversity of the local fruit tree species Uapaca kirkiana and Sclerocarya birrea in Botswana, Namibia, Malawi, Swaziland, Tanzania and Mozambique. Led the Tree Seed Suppliers Directory project – TSSD is currently a database providing suppliers of seeds and microsymbionts of over 8000 tree taxa, the 2002-updated book, CD-ROM and web versions will be available in June 2002. Collaborated in developing several databases of agroforestry species, conducted ethnobotanical research in Kenya and Malawi, participated in various international conferences and workshops, taught about participatory and ecological research (from data collection, data storage to statistical analysis) to scientists from developing countries during courses, workshops, fieldwork and visits to regional stations.
