CHAPTER ONE – CENTRED

INTRODUCTION OF THE STUDY

1.1 Introduction

This is where the researcher introduces the chapter contents or importance by giving the main highlights of the chapter

1.2Background of the Study

Give specifics of the problem 9espacially around the dependent variable), and not the history of the case. Give citations. Build a case for the study. Let there be authoritative sources/citations. Give the global view, continent and regional occurrence of the management problem / issue at hand.

1.3 Statement of the Problem

Should be a paragraph or two and should clearly show what the problem is, especially in the organisation and like organisations? What the research seeks to solve. Give authoritative sources/citation what has been done and what is missing.

1.4 Objectives of the study

An introductory statement is expected; should be the purpose/goals of the study.

  • The objectives are then given in bullets (i) (ii) (iii) or (a) (b) (c)
  • They should be SMART, CC and K.I.S.S
  • The variables must be clear and the relationship should be clear.
  • They should be within the scope
  • There should be no objective as to make recommendations – it’s assumed to exist.

1.5 The research questions are based on the objectives.

  • The number of research questions doesn’t have to be same number as the objectives.
  • The framing of questions should not attract a yes/No answers.
  • An introductory statement should be there.

1.6Significance of the Study

Should explain who benefits from the study and how. This section must be in future tense

1.7Limitations of the Study

Time and money are not limitations

Should show the extend to which the results of the study can be generalized. The reasons given must be beyond the researcher’s control. The stereotype limitations are not acceptable and should not be anticipated.

1.8 Scope of the Study

Should include the concept, context, content scope, the geographical/location scope, section/dept/branch, population/target group and the time scope

CHAPTER TWO

LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1Introduction – Introduce the concept /content of study

2.2Review of theoretical literature which should be done from a global point down to the Kenyan and local situation

2.2.1}

2.2.1} should cover the objectives

2.2.3}

Acknowledge the sources

2.3Review of Critical / analytical literature

Should identify the gap by citing those who have worked on the concept as well as the connection between what is being studied (variables) and what has been studied recently on the variable together with a connection between the variables and the main problem of investigation

2.4Summary and gaps to be filled

Highlight of the key issues raised, facts

Reviewed issues that have been raised

2.5Theoretical/Conceptual framework

It’s either a theoretical or conceptual framework. The conceptual framework is deeper and the models created must be shown. Theories/principles/concepts must have those who postulated them and when and where the researcher has gotten them from. Explain how the variables of the study relate to each other. The sketches must have numbers, title, source and the application of the model to the study.

CHAPTER THREE

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

3.1Introduction – content of the chapter

3.2The study design

Mention the study design/explain and justify why the case/survey is used

3.3Target Population

Explain the total population from an authoritative source

Who are the respondents in the study? This is obtained from the topic and the scope of the study 9i.e all possible subjects who can reliably be involved in the study) Can be the whole organisation, a department, a section, a branch or a number of organisations.

3.4Sampling Design

Includes the sample size and how it was determined.

Include the sampling procedure and justify what that procedure entails or is useful in your study.

Adequate information should be given in explaining the procedures

Connect the Target population to sample size in terms of justifying why not all were used for the study

3.5Data Collection Methods and Instruments

Justify the use of data collection instruments; questionnaire, interview guide, observation, focus group discussion, brainstorming e.t.c

Why they were used

They must be attached at the appendices

Reliability and validity must be checked

Types of questions and why must also be explained and/or justified

3.5.1 Reliability and Validity

What was done where, number of respondents and the findings?

Administration – how were the questionnaires given out?

3.6Data Analysis Methods and Procedures

Explain how analysis was done to what type of data 9quantitative or qualitative). Justify why seek the data type being analysed

Why which methods

CHAPTER FOUR

DATA ANALYSIS, PRESENTATION AND INTERPRETATION OF FINDINGS

4.1Introduction – overview of chapter guided by objectives

4.2Presentation of findings (according to research objectives).

Each objective should be addressed by the data analyzed starting with the general information age, gender e.t.c and presenting chronologically according to the listing of the items/questions in the questionnaire; both open and close ended questions.

Tables should have table numbers and headings. Introduce the table, draw an appropriate graph and discuss the interpretation must be included. Graphs and tables should have a title at the top and the source (usually the author and year of publication) at the bottom. Graphs should be well labeled with the percentages and item of discussion; e.g male, female e.t.c as well as labeling the graphs that have axes

Checkthat all the objectiveshavebeenaddressed

The information discussed must be what is done in the table and graph.

The table and graph must be mentioned (usually; from table 4.3 and figure 4.3, it is clear that ………).

The table (representing analysis) and graph (representing presentation) must be correct.

4.3 Summary of data analysis

This section highlights the main data trends from all sections without including the tables and graphs. General information is first presented and then the variables.

CHAPTER FIVE

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

5.1Introduction

5.2Summary of Findings (according to research questions)

5.2.1( Write research question one) and discuss the major trends/findings.

5.2.2(Write research question two) and discuss the major trends/findings.Statistics must be used in all cases.

5.3Conclusions –

Give the major observations or trends emanating from the findings (what you deduce from the findings) done per paragraph for each of the variables.

5.4Recommendations

Done by giving possible solutions to the main problem, solved from the point of view of individual variables. Recommendations can be more valid, reliable and practical if they are given by the respondents themselves through asking relevant questions on each of the variables and what can be done about e.g a certain variable to improve on the main variable)

5.5Suggestions for further studies

Should be along the study area, the perceived gaps or areas that have not been attended to or; in the view of the researcher, related areas that can beef-up the study.
