TATA STEEL LTD. JAMSHEDPUR

July, 2009 – Present

Professional Experience summary:

·  Have been posted at Jamshedpur in the main steel plant of Tata Steel since July 2009 with the responsibility of coordinating quality control of raw materials and finished goods, manufacturing support/technical service activities, maintenance of quality assurance systems and improvement projects in close coordination with iron making and ferro alloy smelting production units.

·  Exposure and hands-on experience in production planning, quality control and assurance in metal smelting and re-smelting operations using scrap iron and ferroalloys, using blast furnaces and submerged arc furnaces.

·  Responsibility includes identifying QC testing standards, developing SOPs for testing, investigating major non-conformances in the production process and recommending corrective action.

·  Expertise in reaction engineering, mass transfer operations, reactor design & operation and particle technology in the areas of smelting and mineral beneficiation.

·  Hands on experience in process optimization techniques, lean manufacturing and use of TQM tools.

·  Six Sigma Yellow Belt Holder awarded by Govt of India.

Key improvement projects carried out/associated with:

·  Study of slag chemistry to use high grade chrome ores directly in ferrochrome smelting (Role: Team Leader):- Theoretical thermodynamic studies being carried out currently to analyze slag chemistry and process parameters to use high grade chromium ores without any pre-processing.

·  Use of lean reductants in metal smelting (Role: Team Member):- Designing material balances, operating regimes and slag chemistries to use cheaper but leaner indigenous reductants in ferroalloy smelting.

·  Estimation of Coal flotation kinetics for different seam coals (Role: Team member): (Collaborating institute: Prof. Moys, SA and TRDDC, Pune):- Carried out on-site, online testing of a new device for separating entrained ash particles to enhance clean coal separation in coal flotation cells.

·  Model Development for Floatex Density Separator (Role: Team Leader): This is a recently-developed enhanced hydraulic separation device. Developed an empirical model to predict separation effects online. Work published in Tata Search and communicated to International Journal of Mineral Processing.

·  Development of a method for alternative use of iron ore slimes (Role: Team Member):- A method of briquetting iron ore slimes to be used as LD lump coolant developed.

Professional Achievements:

·  Technical contributions till date have been communicated to two reputed International Journals. One paper accepted for publication in International Journal of Mineral Processing.

·  Second best technical paper award in Tata Search-2011.

·  Paper accepted for presentation at Physical Separation-2011, Cornwall, UK.

Training Modules (Training Institute):

·  Safety for Plant Managers (SNTI, Tata Steel)

·  TQM Induction program (TMDC, Tata Steel).

·  Data Handling for Quality Assurance (TMDC, Tata Steel)

Other Industrial Exposure

·  Undergone a 15 day industrial training at M/s. Travancore Cochin Chemicals Ltd., Kochi

·  Industrial visit and BTech project carried out at Kochi Refinery Ltd., BPCL, Kochi.

Projects undertaken

v  Recovery of Naphtha from Aromatic recovery unit

As part of completion of the curriculum to obtain BTech degree at Calicut University, this project dealt with an analysis of the working a typical Aromatic Recovery Unit for the recovery of aromatics from crude distillates and design of a binary distillation column.

v  Investigation of High-Frequency, High Intensity Ultrasound for Thermal Destratification of Water : Effect Of Storage Pressure*

Carried out under the guidance of Dr. R.Nagarajan, Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Madras, as part of a team, the project deals with the study of changes in destratification effects due to changes in parameters, viz. storage pressure, frequency and power input of applied ultrasound.

v  Investigation of the effect of High Frequency, High Intensity Ultrasound in thermal destratification of Cryogenic liquids

Undertaken as MTech project under the guidance of Dr. R.Nagarajan, Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Madras, the project deals with the application of ultrasound to counter the problem of thermal stratification under cryogenic conditions. This would be the first time that this technology has been tried for the current application. The project was sponsored by ISRO, Trivandrum.
