The band is back together

And ready to appear at the San Diego International Auto Show

San Diego, Cal., Dec. 16, 2016 – The San Diego International Auto Show (SDIAS) is fast approaching, and soon we’ll be banging the drum. And playing the guitar, and various other instruments made from – wait for it – car parts. What better way to celebrate the industry than making beautiful noise – with car parts. Tubes, tanks, hoses. Car parts. Did we mention that the instruments are made from car parts? The Car Parts Symphony is returning to the SDIAS, which runs Dec. 31 – Jan. 3 at the San Diego Convention Center.

“The Car Parts Symphony was received so enthusiastically that the musicians were delighted to come back for another year,” says Paula Brandes, executive director of the San Diego Automotive Museum, which brought the Symphony together. “The members of the Symphony have been busy, but with the show right around the corner, they’re tuning up and will be ready to hit the stage.”

The Car Parts Symphony was the brainchild of Brandes, a musician herself, who recruited local musicians to create and play the instruments.

“It’s quite an array of – ahem – instruments,” says Brandes. But instruments they are, and they deliver a surprisingly refined sound. The instruments, and their former shapes are:

·  Drums made from wheel rims and gas tanks

·  Marimba made from radiator hoses

·  Horn made from a tail pipe

·  Two electric guitars made from hub caps

·  Bass made from a gas tank

·  Steel Drum made from hub caps

Last year, the troupe played original music composed by local rock musician, Patrick Beers. Show organizers are certain that they’ll out do themselves at this year’s show.

“It’s truly one of the most unique features we’ve ever had at the show,” says Kevin Leap, show director. “And that’s saying something, given some of the incredible exhibits that we have at the show.”

Leap says that the troupe will be located once again in the San Diego Union Tribune space (between Honda and Subaru) and that they’ll play for 20 minutes, twice daily at 11 am and 2 pm during the run of the auto show.
