COLONEL EDWARD BOLITHO OBE
Edward Bolitho was born and brought up in Penzance and, after leaving school, gained a degree in Land Economy at Pembroke College, Cambridge. He then joined the Grenadier Guards in 1978, serving with them across the world and commanding the 1st Battalion 1993-95, during which time he was awarded the OBE. He left the Army in 1998 in the rank of Colonel, returning to Cornwall in order to run Bolitho Estates on behalf of the wider family. Principally based in West Cornwall, these businesses develop, renovate and lease out farms, houses and commercial properties. They also manage various leisure activities – Trewidden Garden, Trengwainton Garden (in partnership with the National Trust) and holiday properties – and is closely involved in conservation matters.
Having been Regimental Lieutenant Colonel Grenadier Guards 2000-2007 and Honorary Air Commodore 2625 (County of Cornwall) Squadron Royal Auxiliary Air Force 2000-2006, he retains wider links with the Armed Forces as one of the Honourable Corps of Gentlemen at Arms and also as a Grenadier Regimental Trustee. He was High Sheriff of Cornwall for 2011 and, having been a deputy lieutenant since 2008, was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly in September 2011 on the retirement of Lady Mary Holborow. In this role, as The Queen’s representative here, he has wide responsibilities, such as organising royal visits, presenting award and leading the magistracy. He also has close links with a large number of business and voluntary organisations, from agriculture, the judiciary, the military, youth organisations, conservation and heritage, to education and the church. Edward is married to Alexandra, who is much involved in Cornish life, particularly through a variety of voluntary organisations including Marie Curie Cornwall, the National Maritime Museum Falmouth and the NSPCC. They have twin daughters and a son, all working away from Cornwall at present, and a large number of dependent animals.
