WorkSafe Country Championships

Every year the WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country Championships grow in prestige.

In 2014, 42 leagues - including a few from across the Murray - will clash in the annual battle for bragging rights.

This year, 34 leagues will be out to secure victory and move up the rankings ladder, with Geelong hosting the Peninsula FL to determine who holds the title of the best league in country Victoria.

A further eight leagues will compete in the State’s far north, putting their respective reputations on the line as part of the WorkSafe Country Championships.

For some leagues, such as the Brendan Fevola-coached Ovens and Murray FL, it represents a chance to rebuild reputations tarnished by recent defeats.

While considered by many as one of Victoria’s best country competitions, the Ovens and Murray FL sits fifth on the rankings table and will need to overcome a hungry Hampden FL to progress to the 3v4 play-off in 2015.

For others, such as the Mallee FL and the Central Highlands FL, this year's Championships present an opportunity to continue their charge up the rankings.

The Mallee men have won their past three interleague encounters and can sneak into the top 10 with a win over the Yarra Valley Mountain DFL.

Only Geelong has an equally impressive record, but their No.1 ranking will be put to the test against a formidable side from the Peninsula FL.

The men from beside the bay were too classy for the O&M last year and are quietly confident of another upset this time around.

At the other end of the rankings table, we welcome the Mininera FL and the Golden Rivers FL to the WorkSafe Country Championships.

Their clash at Lake Bolac is expected to be as fierce as any and we wish them the best of luck in their return to interleague football.

Players from all leagues will be out to impress and press their case for selection WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country’s representative sides.

This year, players chosen as part of the WorkSafe AFL Victoria County No.1 side will clash against a representative team from Melbourne’s six major senior competitions in the AFL Victoria Community Cup on July 12.

As they have in the past, a second Vic Country team – comprising of players from leagues ranked 11 and below – will also take to the field against a representative of the Victorian Amateur Football’s Association on the same day.

The WorkSafe Victoria County U19 side will also take on a VAFA U19 outfit as a curtain raiser to the Metro vs Country clash.

The WorkSafe Country Championships are proudly supported by the Responsible Gambling Foundation.
