Advanced Teacher Practitioners

The six equality strands are: race, disability, gender, sexual orientation, faith/belief and age.

Equality
Equality is about emphasising inclusiveness, openness and fairness, offering a positive outlook on the many differences, as well as similarities that can affect how people interact and perform with each other in their daily lives. A range of laws are in place to enforce equal opportunities.
Diversity
Diversity is about respecting, celebrating and valuing differences within groups and not expecting everyone to conform to the ways of the majority.
The promotion of equality and diversity is underpinned by:

Communication skills:
listening to others;
using appropriate language
expressing our views. / Non-discriminatory and non-judgemental
Plan lessons that interest motivate and engage all learners. / Learners have access to a range of resources that meet learning needs and preferred modes of learning.
In tutorial:
·  respecting yourself and others;
·  understanding rights and responsibilities;
·  avoiding and resolving conflict
·  cultural awareness;
·  consequences of harassment and bullying.
Current issues, eg employment immigration and crime. / Differentiate to meet learners’ needs.
Where necessary provide individual support.
Use language that is appropriate for learners.
Challenge stereotypes and discriminatory behaviour. / Teaching and learning materials are available in a range of formats.
Learning materials are free from bias.
Learning materials promote diversity.
Seeking opportunities to develop learners’ knowledge about laws relating to equality, eg employment equality, race relations, sex and disability discrimination and the human rights act. / Identify learner support needs.
Ensure the environment is safe and welcoming for all.
Ask learners how they prefer to learn. / Materials proactively combat discriminatory attitudes and practices.
Making a positive contribution, eg volunteering and fund raising for charity. / Manage the physical environment to maximise accessibility.
