I. / Course Description: / This course is a comprehensive study of critical issues and events in United States history from 1900 through modern day. Studies will include the changing social, political, economic, and cultural forces at work within the nation.
II. / Course Objectives: / At the completion of this course students will have further developed their abstract thinking. Students will now be able to compare, analyze and explain events and developments in our nation’s history.

Accommodations:
Requests for accommodations for this course or any school event are welcomed from students and parents.
Concerning laptop utilization:
1. Student laptops should not be hard wired to the network or have print capabilities.
2. Use of discs, flash drives, jump drives, or other USB devices will not be allowed on Madison City computers.
3. Neither the teacher, nor the school is responsible for broken, stolen, or lost laptops.
4. Laptops and other electronic devices will be used at the individual discretion of the teacher.
IV. / Grading Policy: / Test grades will account for 70% of the 9-weeks grade, with the remaining 30% being determined by quiz/daily grades. The grading scale is as follows: A (90-100), B (80-89), C (70-79), D (65-69), and F (below 65). Grades will be a reflection of mastery of the standards. Make sure all absences are excused as class work can be made up and graded for excused absences only. The Final Exam counts for 1/5 of final grade.
V. / Make-up Work Policy: / It is the responsibility of each student to check in with the teacher for missed work. If you miss a day of school, assume that you missed something. All work not completed when assigned will be recorded as a zero until turned in and graded. All work should be completed within three days of the student’s return to class. See teacher for extenuating circumstances.

VII. / Materials and Supplies Needed: / Everyday, you will need a pen or pencil, textbook, paper for note taking and assignments and a notebook to keep up with all notes and assignments. If you need help getting of these materials, please see me. I will be glad to provide supplies for students in need.

* The syllabus serves as a guide for both the teacher and student; however, during the term it may become necessary to make additions, deletions, or substitutions. Adequate notice will be provided to students of any necessary changes.

CLASSROOM POLICIES

**Please note that these policies apply in Ms. Harper’s classroom and may not be applicable for other teachers.

Test retakes: -Students are permitted to retake ONE test per 9 weeks. This must be scheduled with the teacher and completed before or after school or on Thursdays during REFUEL. Student must complete a Request to Retest form and complete (and prove) additional study activities.

Test Corrections: Any student who fails a test will be required to complete test corrections during REFUEL on Thursdays. Students interested in increasing their test grade may also complete test corrections on Thursdays during REFUEL. PLEASE notify Ms. Harper if you plan to complete test corrections that are not required. Please note that corrections may be completed using the textbook and the student’s own handwritten notes/class assignments and will earn HALF credit. The student will be required to note the location of where he/she found the correct information. There are NO second chances on corrections.

Electronics in the classroom-ALL DEVICES SHOULD BE PUT AWAY AT ALL TIMES IN MY CLASSROOM unless directly and specifically permitted. I will let you know any time you are permitted to have your devices out for research or other classwork. Otherwise, devices should be out of sight/out of hand at all times.

Plugs in the classroom- Charging your device in the classroom is a privilege; don’t abuse it! This is the ONLY exception to students having devices out during classtime and will be revoked if it becomes a disturbance. Charging devices are NOT to be in use or accessible to students during class. Students may charge devices using the plugs in the wall in the classroom under most circumstances. PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE SOMETHING ALREADY PLUGGED IN to plug in your device. PLEASE TAKE CARE OF THIS BEFORE AND AFTER CLASS. Students should not be moving around the room to check phones or other devices that are charging or passing chargers around the room.
