MCR MINI-UPDATE JULY 2015

Fellow Registrars,

Jeanette, Angela, Shari and I are just back from an interesting NAACCR annual meeting in Charlotte (complete with record-breaking heat!). We learned a lot about new ideas in central registry operations as well as trends in the national registry landscape. I’ve got lots of notes and resource links to check! Some initial items of general interest are mentioned below. MCR-ARC will be hosting the annual meeting in St. Louis next year. MU staff development funds allowed us to send a larger than usual contingent so that we could learn about behind the scenes work that we’ll be involved with next year. Stay tuned as our plans develop!

DUE DATES

Large hospitals (>500 cases/yr.) are to report Dec. 2014 cases by July 15 and smaller facilities (<300 cases /yr.) report the 4th Quarter of 2014 by July 15.

If you have already converted to v15, you must hold cases until we are ready to accept v15 in August (date to be announced)

·  One transmittal form saying that you are converted to v15 and hence holding cases helps us know that you are not delinquent.

If your database software is still in v14

·  Please upload any completed 2014 and earlier cases in v14 by July 15.

·  If you have started abstracting any 2015 cases in v14, hold those to submit to MCR in v15 in August.

·  Then work with your software vendor to convert your software to NAACCR v15. We want everyone to be able to make an August submission in v15.

·  If you have remaining 2014 or earlier cases to abstract after your conversion to v15, that will be OK.

July 9, 2015 – Survivorship Care Plans

GoToMeeting - There are only 25 lines available so it will be a first come first serve on the day of the meeting. I recommend that if there are several of you from one facility that want to participate in a meeting that you call in together. For those of you not familiar with GoToMeeting, you can listen via your computers speakers and ask questions via a mic or the chat within GoToMeeting. If you have to call in you will be charged a long distance call.

Gold Again!

Death Clearance

Death Clearance followback for the year 2013 is fast approaching. There are some significant changes to the process this year that will be presented to registrars in an upcoming Go to Meeting which will also serve as a refresher on how to use the Web Plus application to process followback. Please watch for further information on the date and time and plan to join us.

Notes from NAACCR 2015

FORDS Revision Project: Dr. Greene reported that they had over 800 suggestions offered on their input surveys. They will be analyzing each of them, consulting focus groups and deliberating on changes with a goal of implementation in January 2018. He also mentioned that the 8th edition of the AJCC Cancer Staging Manual is due to be released for use in January 2017.

SEER Educate was highlighted as a very useful (free!) tool for staying updated on abstracting, because it shows you how the correct codes were determined. You also earn CEUs! Some managers have their staff complete a case regularly and submit a proficiency report of their findings. Many reports types are available. This helps to identify strengths as well as needs for further training or quality control. Standard setters can see aggregated results for reliability and determine where certain standards need to be clarified.

Synoptic Reports for Radiology: A radiologist association is exploring the feasibility of adding synoptic report checklists to their oncology imaging reports. These would function much like the CAP protocols that pathologists use and hopefully make data mining and case ascertainment more efficient.

Genomics continue to be a hot topic. One presenter from Duke offered findings that indicate that prostate cancer disparities that appear racial may be more related to RNA splicing of genes that regulate androgen receptor pathways and allow for cell proliferation and metastasis. Such gene variants are much more common in African American males, but 14% of Caucasians also carry this genotype and 17% of African American males do not. Thus genetic classification may be more important to outcome than stated racial identity. This knowledge could pave the way for drugs to correct or prevent the aberrant splicing.

The Future of SSFs: SEER is reviewing all of the CS Site Specific Factors to determine which need to continue to be collected. There will be an emphasis on biomarkers. Assessment includes determining if a factor is available, prognostic or relevant. A committee has made preliminary recommendations which are now being reviewed by a registrar focus group. A panel of medical experts will also be involved. They expect that collection of a set of SSFs will continue to evolve over time as oncology practices change. Automated collection of values from lab feeds or linkages is being explored.

The 25th edition of the publication Cancer in North America (CINA): 2008-2012 is now available on the NAACCR web site. Please visit www.naaccr.org and select Data and Publications for free access/downloading of the publication. This publication series presents cancer incidence data as collected by the regional, state, provincial and territorial NAACCR member registries across North America. This publication is possible due to the ongoing and excellent efforts of our member registries to assemble high quality and timely cancer incidence data.

There is still time until July 31 to earn CEUs by voluntarily participating in the SEER 2015 Assessment of Building Blocks for Stage for Transition from Collaborative Stage study. This study is designed to assess overall registrar training needs by analyzing de-identified results of coding exercises for 10-20 cases. You will get to see the preferred answers and study results. AJCC

Module IV of the AJCC Curriculum for Registrars is due to be released by July 15 with a webinar in August. This is the final module. Recordings of previous modules are also available. You can earn free CR credits for completing modules II-IV.
