Newsletter September 2013 and Annual Meeting Notice
Dear Strawberry Park Member
It’s that time again for our Strawberry Park Group (SPG) Annual Meeting. Last year’s weekday meeting at Perry Mansfield seemed to work for many, so we’re going to try that again this year. We will host the annual meeting at 5:30 p.m. on September 16th directly after the annual Soda Creek Ditch Company meeting. However, we’ll assemble at the Jane Harris Pavilion instead of in the Perry Mansfield cafeteria. Don Johnson has invited the membership to come to the Hot Springs after the meeting for open swimming and to look at his upcoming plans. We hope you will join us. Details can be found in the enclosed flyer.
Board Membership
We’ve had five SPG Board members serving this year (of nine positions authorized in our by-laws): Mike Cook, Ben and Millie Beall, Julie Andrews, and Don Johnson.. Mike and Butch completed their two-year term. Please think about joining the Board to help your Strawberry Park neighborhood. We provide an important sounding board back to the County and SPG neighborhood as issues arise needing some response from our part of the County. There will be nominations for the 2014 SPG Board at the Annual meeting. If you, or any of your neighbors, wish to be a part of the Board, please make any member of the existing Board aware.
Meanwhile, the following newsletter summarizes some of our discussions since last year’s meeting. s.
Strawberry Park Hot Springs
Don Johnson made a presentation to the Board asking for support to the County for his upcoming plans to further improve his facilities. He would like to bring four of his single cabins into two small duplex cabins with kitchenettes, and make significant facelifts and renovation to some of his common buildings. He will make a presentation to the membership at the Annual Meeting and hopes many of the membership will come to his Hot Springs after the meeting for open swimming and to look closer at his plans. .
YVEA power line replacement.
The membership had asked YVEA two years ago to address the intermittent power outages in the Park. YVEA approved a new line into the Park, and completed the new line and removal of the old poles this last year. You’ll see more YVEA activity this fall down Clatty Lane (the new name of the access road to the Whittum’s and Wright’s homes across from the RCR 36 and 38 intersection). YVEA will be replacing power poles along the road toward Copper Ridge.
Perry Mansfield 100 Year Celebration
Perry Mansfield celebrated their first 100 years this summer. While the SPG had little involvement, many of our membership were involved in this celebration. It appears to have been quite successful, bringing in many new visitors and alumni from around the country. Perry Mansfield has been asked to give us some feedback on their program at our Annual Meeting.
Strawberry Park Group Website
The membership asked the Board to address creation of a SPG website. While some work was done on the site, (the website will be Strawberryparkgroup.org), it will need more effort and details before it can be published. We’ll be asking the membership for feedback on just what you want to see on the site.
Verizon Cell Phone Reception
The membership asked the Board to look at any options to improve Verizon cell phone service in the Park. Millie has a recent reply to her letter to Verizon and will give an update at the Annual Meeting.
RCR 38 Traffic The Board was asked to address a perceived problem in traffic, especially snowmobile traffic, up Buffalo Pass during the winter months. With some drivers over the speed limits and driving down the middle of the road, and others parking at the bottom of the hill, driving taking their snowmobiles up the road, some thought a significant accident was just waiting to happen. The Board wrote a letter addressed to the County Sheriff’s office, the Forest Service and copied to Routt County Roads and Grounds. We’ll see if it’s had any affect this winter.
Community Garden:
Mike Cook did some more work on the Garden this year. The irrigation pump in the ditch used to water the gardens died, requiring purchase and installation of a new one. Additional plants were added. There was discussion on consolidating the two garden circles into one larger one as a future improvement.
Other information:
Soda Creek Ditch Company. The Ditch Company will also hold its annual meeting just before our Annual Meeting on September 16 as noted at the enclosed flyer. .
Please let Mike Cook know if your address below has changed. He maintains a database of all known residents living or owning property in Strawberry Park. If you had neighbors who have moved, or have new neighbors who may not have had their information updated into the Park database, please let Mike know so he can update it. We would be especially interested in any new neighbors who may not know of the SPG Annual Meeting and would like to attend.
