CATALOG DESCRIPTION:
Introduction to the study of the comparative study of primitive societies. The basic institutions of human society such as kinship, religion, law, politics and economics are examined in order to provide a comparative background for a better understanding of contemporary societies.
Hybrid:A Hybrid course is a type of course that combines face-to-face instruction with computer based learning, which may include several forms of technology
(internet, cd-rom, etc.) as a substitute for a portion of the
instruction that a student would otherwise receive in an campus
classroom or lab. At SMC, this division of time and resources will be
15 hours face-to-face, 15 online activities, 15 hours independent
research and study plus "normal" out of class study and research.

Course Outcomes
The purpose of this course is to provide students with a basic understanding of the field of cultural anthropology. The course is a part of the Social Science curriculum and as such is open to both first and second year students. Upon completion of this course students can be expected to have fulfilled the following requirements:
1. Use on-line learning tools to successfully complete the competencies for this course.
2. Define anthropology
3. Define culture
4. Define cultural anthropology
5. Analyze Anthropology as a social science
6. Analyze the Political and Economic systems that affect societies.
7. Analyze the scientific method and orientation
8. Analyze the components of social structure.
9. Explain evolution, adaptation and natural selection.
10. Identify the components of culture.
11. Identify and analyze the implication of language on behavior and beliefs.
12. Identify and assess the implications of major social forces.
13. Describe the different components of kinship and marriage practices.
14. Analyze the role culture plays in terms of basic human survival.
15. Analyze the consequences of multi-culturalism on the social order.

Method of Instruction:
This course will deal with a variety of learning styles; lecture, Blackboard.com,
SMC Wired, Internet, group work and class discussion. You are responsible for all materials from lecture, the text and any additional materials: written, video or internet
Attendance Policy
ATTENDANCE is required (20 points per session) and recommended and expected. Except: in the case of extreme absence (over 50 %.) the instructor reserves the right to lower your grade by one full letter grade. In case of doubt relating to the grade, the instructor reserves the right to use attendance and attitude as the deciding criteria. Due to a policy, started at SMC, attendance will be taken. The policy is called the “Early Warning System". If, you are not attending class or receiving very low grades(<60%) or in jeopardy of failing and need to withdraw you will be contacted by Student Services with a letter from your instructor with what your options are at that point in the semester or by the instructor via e-mail from SMC Wired.
However because of the nature of this class your physical attendance at the six sessions is very important but as important is your presence on-line – you must participate w/ the on-line activities and monitor the discussion boards, announcements, Wired and Blackboard.com.
Please consider contacting the instructor before you just leave class for any reason perhaps something can be done so that you will not lose the credit for the semester.

Testing Policy:Tests will be taken in the Testing Center and for full credit taken w/in one week of the class session. Late Tests will be remain in the Testing Center for make up during regularly schedule hours w/ and must be completed before the next class. After that time the test is removed and may not be made up. Only two tests may be missed then any other missed tests may not be made up. Late tests may not be made up during class time. You will have the opportunity to correct you quizzes for an additional 10 points. You must correct all errors, including bonus, for full credit. For example if you receive a 19/0 on a test you must correct all 21 points for the 10. If, you receive a 36/40 you correct the 4 and receive the 10 points thus providing a "cushion". Of the test is taken late than correction will only be worth five (5) points. This will be discussed more later in class.

Definitions: LATE An assignment or test is considered late if it is not received by the instructor by the end of office hours on the assigned due date. The instructor, office personnel or staff is not responsible for material not given directly to the instructor. materials left in mailboxes, under doors, or given to anyone other than the instructor is left at the risk of the student-if possible keep a copy of work for yourself.
CHEATING: is, but not limited to: using any additional written materials other than what has been provided for you during test time, viewing other student's work, communication of any kind with another student during test time and using another person's work as your own.

Papers and Test will be posted within a week of turning them in; this does not apply to late work and returned at the next class session
