www.classmarker.com for online tests and quizzes

Free or upgrade to educational professional for $24.95 (I use free version)

In top right, register for a free account. Then select “instructor Registration”.

CREATE CLASSES

Go to My Classes and select Create New Class:

Enter a class name:

Select Administer Learners

Scroll down and register learners in a batch and set up the class password. ( I use powerschool to get class lists and copy and paste them in to this screen). You can also register learners individually (I do this when a new student starts the class). You can also have students register themselves but I never tried this.

You can then create classes for all of your class periods:

MAKE A TEST:

Select My Tests:

Make categories of tests if you want (I have chemistry, Chemcomm, and science 7 set as categories)

Select Create New Test:

Enter a test name and category and select Add New Test.

Select View Options and then Enter New Questions Directly into Test

Select the questions type.

I don’t like Free Text option, Essay is better. With free text, the student must enter answer exactly as you show as correct answer with no variation. If you capitalize and they don’t it’ll mark it wrong. (Eg If answer is 10 meters and I type “10 meters”, they will be marked wrong for 10 m or 10 Meters etc..)

With Multiple choice and true false the program grades it when student finishes test. With essay, you view response and apply the number of points you want to give to the answer. (upgrade to paid version and you can type in grading comments back to the student, for free I tell the student why they lost points)

You can imbed pictures and graphs into the test questions. Use the picture icon and copy and paste a web address to the pictures. So far I have found Google Images for every graph or lab photo I have wanted them to use but I could upload my own pictures to a wiki and use them too.

All questions get stored in a question bank (saved by category) for easy insert and editing into future tests.

For Multiple Choice: it lets you put in up to 10 answer choices, assign number of points each question is worth, and choose to randomize the answer choices.

TO ASSIGN A TEST TO A CLASS:

Go to My Classes. Select a Class. Select Assign a Test. Select a Test and go into its test settings and pick Assign test now.

I also let the settings stay on Score Only until after all students have taken the test and then change it to “Score, chosen answer and correct answer” . Then when we go over the test all the students open their tests up on classmarker so they can see it all.

Scroll down on this screen gives you lots of choices for test settings ( I keep test marker Unavailable until kids are in class and ready to test):

WHEN KIDS ARE IN CLASS AND READY TO TAKE TEST:

Go to My Classes, select a class, and click Tests and Results”, then find the test and click on Show Test

When they are doing test or finished it you can click on Class Results to watch who is in progress or complete (refresh page, F5, periodically).

For a specific student- click on View Results to see their test and to score their Essays.

TO EDIT TESTS THAT YOU ALREADY CREATED:

Go to “My Tests” and select a test that you want to edit or copy:

To edit a question : find the question and select Edit Question. Note that any changes you type will change that question for ALL PAST and FUTURE tests. I have changed a question so the next period class has a different question and it changes the question on the earlier tests as well (so it may show a students correct answer but with question no longer matching the answer). So I use this to change tests from year to year or to fix a typo but not to vary questions between periods.

To change an entire test – eg for period-to-period variations or to build a retest:

While looking at a specific test – select View Options, Copy Test, type in the new test name, then select Make Duplicate Copy. Then go back into your test list and go into the new test and edit, delete, or add new questions freely without changing the original test

ADVANTAGES TO CLASSMARKER:

Kids can’t lose their tests. So for retests and studying for midterms and finals all students can see all their tests.

I can edit and change questions easily. Even if kids are in the test, I can make a correction and tell them to refresh page (F5) and it corrects on their screens

Its easy to edit questions to make different versions for each class period.

Saves paper

The program rotates the question order and the answer order so it’s harder for them to cheat.

I have Jim watch the internet use during test time to see if my kids are only in classmarker.com so cheating is caught with proof with the internet access logs

If parents want to know why a student did poorly in a test, I can copy and paste test into an email to the parent.
