ADMINISTRATION ORDER FOR 1

ROYAL NAVY AND ROYAL MARINES CYCLING ASSOCIATION COMBINED CROSS-COUNTRY & DOWNHILL MTB COACHING WEEKEND

Introduction

1.  The Combined XC & DH Race Coaching Weekend will take place 2-6 Mar 16. Riders will be accommodated at Capel Curig Training Centre and make use of Revolution Bike Park, Antur Stiniog and Coed-y-Brenin. The intention is to use this opportunity to conduct cross-training of the XC and DH disciplines in preparation for the 2015 race season using the collective experience of the race riders and some dedicated coaching sessions.

Aim

2.  The aim of the Administration Order is to give further information and guidance on this event.

Background

3.  The RNRMCA Mountain Bike Section continues to grow, especially in the gravity discipline. To build on this success, the Association is holding a combined XC and DH skills coaching camp focussed on developing riders’ technical and race skills, as well as giving the riders an opportunity to train together in more realistic conditions than can be achieved during the main training camp in Majorca.

4.  Capel Curig is fast developing as a centre for mountain bike training across all 3 services given its proximity to both XC (Marin, Penmachno and Coed-y-Brenin) and DH (Revolution, Antur Stiniog and Llandegla) trails. The accommodation is available at the Capel Curig site itself and acts as an ideal site to base both disciplines at.

Event Format

5.  The purpose of the event is to hone technical skills on challenging trails through collective training and as such is not suitable for complete novice riders. Although the two disciplines will probably ride at separate venues, there will be an opportunity to discuss techniques and approaches, as well as some use of local facilities to look at line selection, the ‘psychological’ approach to riding and general training/conditioning.

6.  Only personnel who have already raced downhill are permitted to attend the lead DH aspect of this coaching event (i.e. this is race training, not a novice DH coaching event).

7.  All personnel are to bring their own bikes and protective equipment. Consideration should be given that this is North Wales in early Mar and therefore it is likely to be cold and wet; riders should bring appropriate riding clothes for the days they intend to ride.

8.  Land clearance has been given for use of Revolution Bike Park, Antur Stiniog and Coed-y-Brenin. If other areas are required, then further clearance will needed to be gained through the DIO staff at Capel Curig; any requests in advance should be sent to .

Registration

9.  Personnel should use the application form at Annex A, paying particular notice to the Sections on Lead Discipline, Sports Lottery Membership and RNRMCA Membership. As only 30 places are currently available, priority will be given based on intentions to ride for the Association and the two membership requirements. This is to ensure that all personnel are qualified to receive the benefit of funding assistance from the RNRMCA/TEMERAIRE.

10.  As Capel Curig is a military establishment, all personnel will need to be serving members of the military. If personnel are content to make their own accommodation and travel arrangements, then there may be some flexibility in achieving this; please contact Lt Cdr Alex Bingham on 93832 5334 to discuss further as there are other limiting factors on numbers and participation.

11.  Confirmation of successful applications will be made by close of play 1 Feb 16.

Programme

12.  The exact details will be finalised nearer the time and promulgated once the composition of the attendees is known.

Accommodation

13.  Accommodation is booked for 30 personnel at Capel Curig Training camp on the nights of 2 - 6 Mar. The ‘event’ however does not start until 3 Mar so please do not arrive early on 2 Mar expecting any activity. There will be no evening meal available at Capel Curig on 2 Mar.

14.  The Joining Instructions and Capel Curig Briefing Pack can be found at Enclosure 1 and 2 and MUST be read by all personnel who are attending. Return of your registration form will be your confirmation that you have read, understood and accept the requirements of those documents. The single point of contact for all issues is Lt Cdr Alex Bingham.

Safety

18.  A ratio of one coach to six riders will be maintained at all times during coaching events and all riders will ride at least in pairs at all time. Phones must be carried by all riders when out on the trails to allow them to be contacted should the weather or other factors change and require riders to muster safely.

19.  The designated lead for each discipline will check the weather forecast in the Briefing Room at Capel Curig the day before riding and fill out the Activity Sheet. At the end of the day, when all riders have returned, the Activity Sheet must be removed from the rack where they are stored and returned to the Training Safety Officer.

20.  Discipline leads will need to do a generic, written Risk Assessment for their activity and conduct dynamic risk assessments whilst riding to determine any deviation in conditions or assumptions that may require further mitigations (foul weather clothing, riding in closer proximity, muster and return to accommodation etc). Any concerns will be discussed with the Training Safety Officer at Capel Curig (01690 720142).

Funding

21.  Funding has been made available from a number of sources to assist in the cost of uplift and external coaches. To qualify for support, riders must be members of both the RNRMCA and the Sports Lottery. If you are not a member of either, you may still be able to attend but will have to pay for all additional costs (uplift etc).

22.  To cover the additional costs of organising the weekend, and to qualify for financial support, there will be a personal contribution required from all riders. Money will be collected at the beginning of each day for new arrivals. The additional for DH is in recognition of the subsidy being provided to uplift costs:

Personal contribution (£)
Number of days attending / XC / DH
3-4 / 15 / 40
2 / 10 / 30
1 / 5 / 15

Catering

23.  Contract catering is provided by ESS and is NOT pay as you dine. Feeding requirements will be required in advance and will be fed back by the RNRMCA MTB Sec to Capel Curig a week prior to the event; all specialist dietary requirements will need to be filled in on the application form.

24.  Meal timings: (Breakfast 0700-0800hrs) - (Dinner 1800-1900hrs) are to be strictly adhered to; there are no late or early meal facilities. Non-attendance at booked meals will incur additional costs.

25.  Betws-y-Coed is only a short drive away from Capel Curig, in which can be found a number of food outlets and pubs.

Discipline

26.  This is a formal coaching event and personnel will be expected to treat it as such. Behaviour both in Capel Curig Camp, on the trails and elsewhere must be of the highest standard. Any personnel deemed to have behaved in a manner considered to bring the RN/RM into disrepute will be returned to Unit and their Commanding Officer informed of the reasons.

Other Information

27.  Further information will be promulgated by email to those attending. All personnel are to bring their RN riding kit to allow a PHOTEX and also to represent the RNRMCA on the trails. In the cause of decency, baggy shorts are to be worn by ALL riders!

28.  Service transport is travelling from Portsmouth and Faslane and will be available on a first come first served basis. For further details on departure times etc contact CPO Horsburgh (HMSAUDU-WE-SGC (Horsburgh, Andrew CPO)) for Faslane transport and Lt Cdr Bingham () for Portsmouth.

29.  Any further requests for information should be forwarded to Lt Cdr Alex Bingham at the email address above or on 93832 5334.
