Role Purpose

To contribute to the development, management and implementation of aquaculture research projects.

Key Accountabilities

Key Result Areas / Key Accountabilities
Operations / ·  Contribute engineering, operations and systems expertise to the design of biosecure systems for research projects
·  Assist with the ongoing maintenance and biosecurity compliance of aquaculture group systems
·  Manage relationships with service providers including the Cawthron Aquaculture Park maintenance team
·  Contribute to the preparation of high quality proposals (including budgets, CAPEX applications, business cases) for research and commercial projects
Research / ·  Participate in aquaculture research and consulting projects
·  Work well in teams to ensure scientific excellence is achieved
·  Develop and maintain networks and collaborations in areas of expertise
·  Consult with clients, colleagues, collaborators
·  Contribute ideas and expertise to discussions on scientific and technical aspects of proposals and projects
Biosecurity / ·  Ensure Aquaculture Group operations comply with biosecurity requirements
·  Establish and maintain procedures that ensure biosecurity and meet regulations
·  Manage relationships with MPI and other government agencies
Project Management / ·  Lead and contribute to interdisciplinary research projects and successfully achieve timely delivery, budget and client needs
Quality / ·  Manage time effectively and without supervision
·  Develop quality relationships with clients and collaborators
·  Ensure scientific excellence are achieved
·  Maintain a broad knowledge of relevant information and technology, equipment and systems.
·  Prepare reports that meet defined objectives and quality requirements.
·  Produce high quality science outputs including solutions for aquaculture group clients
Health and Safety / ·  Champion Health and Safety within the Aquaculture Group
·  Adhere to Cawthron Health & Safety Policy and Procedures

Person Specification

·  Degree in aquaculture engineering or hatchery operational management experience

·  At least three years relevant experience in research, hatchery operations or in aquaculture engineering related fields

·  Hatchery experience is preferred

·  Sound understanding of biology and shellfish and/or finfish husbandry experience

·  Practical engineering systems and biosecurity experience

·  Client relationship and collaboration skills

·  Excellent oral and written communication skills

·  Team player, able to work with scientists and as part of a multi-disciplinary team

·  Self-directed and able to use initiative

·  Prepared to work flexible hours and long days when required, with notice

·  Aligned and commited to Cawthron’s purpose and values.
